The Hills faked a lot of storylines—from forced fights between cast members to onscreen relationships. But Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt's relationship was real from the start. Many people didn't think they'd last, but the reality TV stars have been married since 2008.

Now parents to two sons, the couple have been through a lot together. Just as they were recuperating after losing their $10 million fortune, they lost their home to the Palisades fire in January 2025. Amid the tragedy, fans started to appreciate their relationship more.

Many thought it was sweet that Spencer hyped up his wife's "Superficial" (2010) album to make the charts—not only to help them make money to rebuild, but also to make their children proud that Heidi fulfilled her pop star dreams. Here's a timeline of Heidi and Spencer's love story.

1 2006: Heidi Montag Met Spencer Pratt While She Was Filming The Hills

The Couple Worked Together On Making "Speidi" Happen On The Hills

Spencer met Heidi at a club in Los Angeles in 2006 while she was filming The Hills. At that time, the former was hanging out with Caitlyn Jenner's son, Brody Jenner, hoping to join the show. "I was like cartoon goo-goo eyes, heart falling out of my head," Heidi told Vice of their first encounter where she made the first move.

Heidi recalled coming up to Spencer, telling him, "Let's dance." She said she "was twerking before it was twerking," calling the dance "my own creation." The craziness didn't end there. She told everyone, "I was going to marry [Spencer] and that I loved him."

Spencer then joined the show in Season 2, where he and Heidi worked on ending Lauren Conrad's "A-plot" by making "Speidi" happen. At that time, Heidi was the "B-plot." Spencer then used his producer skills to make them the center of the show.

"I was treating the show like a producer because I literally just made a show on FOX," Spencer recalled. "I didn't know how to be on-camera talent."

Heidi and Lauren's friendship ended after the success of Speidi (among many other dramas). "She was like, 'It's my show, my world!'" Heidi shared. "She didn't like someone coming in and changing up the formula because it was her world and she wanted it to stay that way."

2 2007: The Hills Showed Spencer Pratt "Proposing" To Heidi Montag

Spencer Actually Gave Heidi A Promise Ring In The Footage, Not An Engagement Ring

In August 2007, Spencer was caught on MTV cameras "proposing" to Heidi on the Santa Barbara beach. But as it turned out, he was only giving her a promise ring. Spencer later accused the producers of "stealing" their idea for a "'newlyweds get engaged and get married' mini-series."

It was meant to be a "special that would have been, like, six episodes, that would have aired while The Hills was on a break, in between seasons," he told Cosmopolitan in 2016, adding that they "jacked it from us and turned a promise ring scene into an engagement ring, and it kind of snowballed from there."

3 2008: Heidi Montag And Spencer Pratt Eloped In Mexico

Heidi and Spencer got married during a trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico in November 2008. "I was just putting it out there, how easy it would be with no drama," the latter told Us Weekly at that time. "It was exactly the wedding I wanted."

Fans began to doubt the nuptials after The Hills aired footage of Heidi and Spencer having a courthouse wedding the next month. At that time, Spencer told On Air with Ryan Seacrest: "We checked the confidentiality box, so good luck people [in finding out]."

4 2009: Heidi Montag And Spencer Pratt Got Married Again In The U.S.

In April 2009, Heidi and Spencer got married in the U.S. This time, it was at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Pasadena, California, attended by their friends, family, and their The Hills co-stars. The ceremony aired in Season 5 of the show.

A year later, the couple renewed their vows, saying their TV wedding "didn't feel right" back then. "It was a movie, it was a script and it didn't feel right," Spencer told Entertainment Tonight. "No one in that building wanted us to get married. It was a nightmare."

Heidi and Spencer's vow renewal followed a brief split between the two. It started with the former firing her husband as her manager, citing that business and pleasure shouldn't mix. Three months later in June 2010, Heidi filed for divorce.

The split came after The Hills ended. Spencer reacted by saying their marriage was "a show – it was part of The Hills world." He went on to accuse Heidi of not being comfortable with his level of fame.

"It's clear that reality TV-fame-loving Spencer Pratt does not fit with my ex-wife Heidi Montag's ambitions for a motion picture actor/pop star career and being a single sex symbol for the world," he said back then.

6 September 2010: Heidi Montag And Spencer Pratt Got Back Together

A Trip To Costa Rica Brought Heidi And Spencer Back Together

By September 2010, Heidi and Spencer had reconciled after being spotted on a trip to Costa Rica. "We are back together trying to make things work," they told People at that time. "[Costa Rica] really put things in perspective. We do love each other and realized we do want to spend the rest of our lives together."

"[Heidi] thought I was going to leave, but I'm not," Spencer said in August 2010. "I didn't want to get divorced I have nothing in Malibu, I'm homeless, I'm nothing without her."

Heidi then called their vow renewal in November 2010 their "first real marriage" and "first restart." She added that they "deserve a second chance at our marriage and really having this moment and not being robbed of this."

7 2016: Heidi Montag And Spencer Pratt Revealed That They'd Spent Most Of Their $10 Million Fortune

Heidi And Spencer Made Bad Financial Decisions After The Hills

After getting back together, Heidi and Spencer blew most of their $10 million fortune together. In 2016, the couple admitted that they made poor financial choices that led to their "defeat." Spencer admitted they were spending like Hollywood A-listers when they "should have stayed in our reality TV lane."

Heidi recalled going against their managers' advice back then. "I was kind of playing house," she confessed. "I felt like I was someone I wasn't. We had business managers who told us to stop spending but we acted like we knew what we were doing." She then "felt alone and defeated," especially in comparison with their co-stars.

"Everyone else on our cast had houses and we had nothing to show for what we'd done. I was like, the haters were right! It was sad," Heidi continued. Spencer later admitted that his lavish crystal collection-turned-business "made us go broke" for the second time in 2021.

8 2017: Heidi Montag And Spencer Pratt Welcomed Baby No. 1

Heidi And Spencer Named Their Baby Boy, Gunner Stone

On October 1, 2017, Heidi gave birth to her and Spencer's first child, a baby boy named Gunner Stone. The former shared some snaps on Instagram, captioned: "No words will ever be able to describe this miraculous moment of life!"

"I have never been so full of love, joy, gratitude, faith, and euphoria. 💙 " she added. "The deepest love I have ever felt. So blessed to have a beautiful healthy baby @gunnerpratt. Thank you God!" She also thanked Spencer for being her "rock and cheerleader."

9 2019: Heidi Montag And Spencer Pratt Joined The Hills: New Beginnings

Heidi And Spencer Had Done Other Reality Shows Before The Hills Reboot

Heidi and Spencer reunited with their co-stars in a reboot of The Hills called New Beginnings. The first season followed the couple's journey as new parents. Unfortunately, the series was canceled in August 2021 after two seasons. At that point, they'd done other reality shows.

10 2022: Heidi Montag And Spencer Pratt Welcomed Baby No. 2

Heidi Went Through A Long Fertility Journey Before Conceiving Their Second Son, Ryker

Heidi and Spencer welcomed another son, Ryker, on October 4, 2022. But the journey wasn't easy getting to baby no. 2. In August 2021, Heidi underwent surgery to improve her chances of conceiving. It was a hysteroscopic polypectomy procedure or removal of non-cancerous uterine polyps.

In March 2022, Heidi was seen eating a raw bison heart as a new fertility method. "I love trying new things! I've always been very interested in various types of diets," she said at that time. Well, it all worked; two months later, she and Spencer announced they were expecting their second child.
