Much has been said about Henry Cavill’s future in the DCEU. Ever since Warner Bros. made it clear that they don’t seek to continue the continuity established by initial Snyder movies, namely Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, there have been multiple speculations as what lies ahead for Cavill’s Superman in the DCEU Future.
One such speculation involved the rumors of Cavill’s cameo in the 2019 movie Shazam.
While there was indeed a Superman cameo in the movie, it wasn’t actually Cavill wearing the suit. The scene had Superman’s face outside frame, with only his suited body visible. The body in the suit was stuntman, Ryan Handley.
This gave rise to another rumor that Warner Bros. and Cavill have been unable to come to an agreement regarding his contract for playing Superman in future DC movies.
However, this rumor was quickly dispelled representatives from Warner Bros. took to Twitter to assure fans that Cavill was still on board for more movies.
This next, most recent wave of speculation started when it was reported that Cavill and WB have met and the actor has been signed on for five more appearances as Superman in future DC movies.
Fans assumed that this meant an inevitable cameo, or perhaps even a significant role in the upcoming Shazam: Fury of the Gods movie, which is a sequel to 2019’s Shazam.
Director David F. Sandberg was, however, quick to note that this is the same situation as was with the original movie in 2019, and one cannot be sure about anything until it’s happened. He said he therefore he won’t be commenting on any casting rumors.
This speculation, too, has been laid to rest by two sources who are directly involved in the production of Shazam: Fury of Gods and know Cavill’s schedule respectively. The sources, who asked to remain anonymous, confirmed with Variety about Cavill’s non-involvement with the film.
So, Cavill may still be returning as Superman in DCEU, but it won’t be in Shazam 2.
Cavill’s next confirmed appearance as Superman will be in Zack Snyder’s much-anticipated cut of Justice League, which releases on HBO Max in March 2021. Beyond that, the fate of his Superman is still up in the air.
Shazam: Fury of the Gods is scheduled to hit theatres in 2023, and will have Zachary Levi and David F. Sandberg reprising their duties as the titular character and director, respectively.
