Hilaria Didn't Want To Be A 'Wicked Stepmother' To Ireland Baldwin

Hilaria and Alec Baldwin's significant age gap might not have been such a big deal for their marriage, but it did affect Hilaria's relationship with Alec and Kim Basinger's daughter, Ireland Baldwin. While things were a little tense in the beginning, Hilaria was always determined to create a bond with her.

And according to what she revealed in the last episode of The Baldwins, her efforts really paid off. Any insecurities or worries dissipated soon after they met, and while their relationship is far from conventional, they have a good friendship, and Hilaria loves their closeness.

Hilaria Baldwin On Bonding With Ireland

Hilaria and Alec Baldwin have seven young children together, and fans can see their everyday family dynamic in every episode of The Baldwins. But during the March 23 episode, Alec's oldest daughter, who he shares with Kim Basinger, made an appearance.

At 29 years old, Ireland Baldwin is only 11 years younger than Hilaria, so of course, they never really had a conventional step-mother/step-daughter relationship, but they found a way to build a bond.

“I feel like it's unique for a stepmom and stepdaughter relationship, because that's technically what we are,” Hilaria said on the show. “But first of all, I'm 11 years older than her. I didn't raise her, and we find tremendous humor in that, and we always have found tremendous humor.”

Another thing they bonded over is motherhood. Hilaria and Ireland got pregnant almost at the same time.

“It’s so wonderful, because we were pregnant together, but just barely. So, my baby is almost nine months older than Ireland's baby.”

Ireland's appearance on the show was a beautiful moment because Hilaria hadn't seen her step-daughter in a while.

“I haven't seen Ireland in a long time because we live so far and we both had babies, and even though Alec met his new baby granddaughter, I haven't met Holland until this little trip,” she said about Ireland's daughter.

“We FaceTime all the time, we talk all the time, but we haven't actually met up. And so we got all the kids together for a play date this morning.”

Hilaria Didn't Want To Be A 'Wicked Stepmother'

When Hilaria and Alec started dating, it was very important for her to have a good relationship with Ireland. Not just because she wanted to get along with her step-daughter but because she didn't want to put a strain on Alec's relationship with his daughter.

For her, it was simple: if Ireland didn't approve of them dating, she would step aside.

“Before I was her stepmother, when I met her, I first had a conversation with Alec, and I said, you know, if she doesn't like me, I'm not staying ‘cause I'm not going to be a wicked stepmother.”

"My place in life is not to come into a family and cause problems."

One of the reasons they managed to get along, Hilaria presumes, is that she was always mindful not to overstep.

“She has a mom that she has a very good relationship with, and so my job wasn't to come in and parent.”

Fortunately, she needn't have worried. Ireland “immediately welcomed” her.

“It was so easy. We’ve never fought.”
