Alec Baldwin has been through a very traumatic few years. After the tragic 2021 accident on the set of Rust that resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, he's been riddled with regret, as was probably everyone else on the set.

But in addition to that, he recently had to stand trial for manslaughter, and while charges against him were dropped quickly, it was still an incredibly stressful situation. Now that things have calmed down a little, Alec and Hilaria are looking forward to focusing on their family and career, but the past has a way of coming back to haunt everyone, and the trauma Alec went through still affects him in very real ways in his daily life.

During a preview of an episode of their reality show, The Baldwins, which will air on March 9, he and Hilaria opened up about the state of his mental health, and Alec admitted that he's not very good at taking care of himself in that regard.

"For me, my nature [is] to obsess about my problems and try to solve them," he acknowledged.

While this isn't a healthy mind set, the important thing is that he's trying to change.

"I've white-knuckled that steering wheel my whole life. I've tried to make the car go where I wanted it to go and taken years off my life in the process. Now, I’d like to stop doing that."

In Hilaria's opinion, this mentality has to do with the fact that the 66-year-old actor was born and raised in a time when men asking for help to sort out their emotions was seen as a weakness, and it's hard to shed that prejudice.

“Alec is a man born in the 1950s and asking for help is a difficult thing,” she explained in her confessional.

"You’ve got to be a man, you’ve got to be strong, you’ve got to be all these different kinds of things. But I think that asking for help is not something that was modeled for him."

With Hilaria's help and his own determination and drive to get better, Alec has been slowly working towards changing and improving.

Back in February, Alec and Hilaria opened up on their show about just how hard getting over the Rust tragedy has been for them, and for the actor especially.

Alec admitted to being in too much pain to get up, and Hilaria was desperate to find ways to help him.

“I can't even believe that we're going through this," he told his wife in a February episode of the show.

"I always feel more in pain about you than me, because I think to myself, ‘Well, you know, I'm going to try to my best to just get through it.’ And I think what it's done to you and how much it's hurt you."

According to Hilaria, his mental state was in decline for a long time, and he felt a lot of guilt about the accident that killed Halyna, to the point of suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

"Everyone who is close to Alec has seen his mental health decline. He was diagnosed with PTSD, and he says in his darkest moments, 'If an accident had to have happened this day, why am I still here? Why couldn't it have been me?'"

It's encouraging to hear that his mindset has shifted and he's now trying to get better and letting himself be helped, but it's clear he has a long way to go, and his wife's support means more than words can say.
