Talking about feeling alone was not what fans expected during Joanna Gaines' interview on Today. Certain quotes from her interview alongside Hoda Kotb really hit hard with fans. "I realized that I'd never felt so isolated, so alone, than when I was obsessing over making something go perfectly," she said.
Gaines typically looks like she has everything under control on Fixer Upper. Such a sentiment shocked fans in what turned out to be a memorable interview for all the right reasons.
The Fixer Upper star discussed her biggest insecurities and struggles along the way to becoming one of the biggest reality stars out there. There was one minor bump during the interview though. Let's recap how it all went down, and the badly timed commercial break. In fairness to Hoda, it was the behind the scenes producer who was adamant about taking it on time.
Joanna Gaines Discussed Her Childhood Traumas On Today, But Things Took An Awkward Twist When Hoda Kotb Cut To Commercial
For those that need a deeper look into who Joanna Gaines really is, it really doesn't get any better than this interview. Filmed a year ago, the Today Show chat has over 2 million views. Haines was on the show alongside Joda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager discussing her new memoir, The Stories We Tell. While writing the book, Gaines took a vulnerable journey finding out who she really is, and some of the past insecurities. Gaines revealed she has an obsession with making things go perfectly.
Gaines revealed, “When you’re open to share your story, hopefully that inspires other people to feel open, to be vulnerable. I think that’s where healing is, that’s where connection is, that’s where community is,” she said. “When you want to hide, that’s where isolation is, that’s where loneliness is."
Fans were loving the different side of Joanna Gaines. However, there was an awkward moment during the interview that derailed things. "We're going to take a quick break," Kotb says while looking at her producer. "We need to take commercial, I don't know, we can go on." Thankfully, Gained handled the moment like a true class act, and was able to laugh it off.
The moment takes place at the 7:15 mark below.
Joanna Gaines mentioned she was in an "unhealthier place" prior to writing her memoir.
During the interview, another profound moment takes place when Gaines reveals her insecurities all started at a young age by trying to fit in.
"I tried my best to fit in, acting as though I didn't get their jokes about my slanted eyes or hear their whispers when I'd opt for rice instead of fries in the cafeteria line."
“I watched it play out with my mom as well, in how she pretended not to notice the slow glances at the grocery store or hear the quiet insults under someone’s breath,” Gaines wrote. “So I pretended too.”
Fear of failure and what others think turned out to be another problem for Gaines. The reality star was showered with praise in the comments section, as fans loved to see this different side of hers.
Fans wrote:
- "Joanna didn't have to share these struggles, but it's so profound, beautiful and helpful that she chose to."
- "It is crazy how Joanne felt so small and not pretty when I am stunned by her beauty and talent! She is someone I could look at and listen to all day long. She is stunning and so very talented."
- "The pain is visible. It is a process to sort out. She is a breath of fresh air to be so honest about the struggle and the path to self realization. I want people out there to know you are good enough. You are worthy and meant to be here. Keep Going!"
Not only did Joanna help herself while writing the book, but she inspired so many others at the same time.
Joanna Gaines is currently worth $50 million.
Joanna Gaines Recently Returned To Today, And Discussed Her Appreciation For Chip Gaines
Fans were delighted to see Joanna Gaines back on Today, this time alongside Chip Gaines. Chip discussed Joanna's threshold for his sense of humor, while Joanna had praise of her own for their relationship.
"The reason why I fell in love with him was he made me laugh," she tells TODAY.com. "I can be very serious, very, like, unemotional. And so I think what I've loved the most is the way he draws that out of me."
“What I know is there’s, like, this deeply rooted, intentional, strong man who’s also very funny,” she adds, he “really did get this whole package.”
Gaines went on to reveal that from the start, she knew Chip wasn't going to be the quiet type, and that was okay.
"Based on our first date, it was clear that Chip was anything but quiet. He was all over the place, talking about the businesses he’d started, and these ideas he had, and how he was buying up little houses and flipping them, and I was wondering if he was just a bit crazy,"
The interview once again showed a different side of Joanna and her perspective on the relationship, as at times on Fixer Upper, it appears as though she's growing annoyed with her partner. Behind the scenes, it is a completely different story and, although they've had challenges along the way, the couple remain very secure about their relationship years later.
