Bareilles caught COVID-19 at the beginning of the pandemic while working on Waitress in London. She flew back to the states with the virus and her boyfriend, Tippett, "did a good job taking care of me," she told People. "I didn't have it nearly as bad as other people who are struggling with it, one of them being Nick Cordero" who starred as Early in the original Broadway production of Waitress and ended up dying of the disease on July 5, 2020. "I was lucky. I had a very mild case, so I didn't need to go to the hospital or anything." She said the experience of having COVID was "scary because you're waiting for it to get worse the whole time."

In early 2022, Tippett and Bareilles adopted a dog together and named him Louie. He is their new baby and has been a source of joy and chaos for the couple.
