Howard Stern's Relationship With Barbra Streisand Before Their 2023 Interview

Before Barbara Streisand's interview on The Howard Stern Show on October 7th, 2023, the pair had nothing to do with one another. At least, in the public eye. The "People" singer and Meet The Fockers star had never appeared on the SiriusXM show. Even more surprising is the fact that Stern spent little time talking about the A-list celebrity on air. However, they did have a notable interaction at a party in 2011.

In 2011, Stern did share that the two met one another at an industry party and immediately hit it off. In the days before their 2023 interview, Stern reiterated the story and shed light on a few more details.

"I spent the entire last four days immersed in Barbra Streisand," Stern told his audience and co-host Robin Quivers on October 6th. Not only did Stern prep for his interview by listening to the 48-hour-long audio memoir "My Name Is Barbra", but he also rewatched some of her movies. Stern admitted that he has been a huge fan of Streisand, but particularly her directing.

Howard Stern's mother, Ray, on the other hand, has been a follower of Streisand's music for decades. So, when Stern told her that Streisand was going to appear, Ray was thrilled. And despite losing her memory due to her old age, Ray began to sing Stern Streisand's duet with her own son, "How Deep Is The Ocean".

Despite Howard Stern rarely changing the time of his show for a celebrity guest, he did so to accommodate Barbra Streisand's strange sleep schedule. According to her representation, she gets up at about 11 AM each day whereas Stern regularly starts his show at 7 AM.

But he claimed it was worth it because of his admiration for her.

Howard Stern and Barbra Streisand met at an unnamed celebrity's house in The Hamptons in 2011. Stern, who never felt comfortable around celebrities, claimed he was called over to meet Streisand and her husband James Brolin.

During his October 6th broadcast, Stern told his co-host Robin Quivers and his audience what happened:

"I go over, her husband was great to me, and she was sitting down. I sat down next to her. We talked for like an hour maybe. I don't know -- an hour and a half. I was completely into it. It was fantastic. Great conversation, like I had known her a hundred years."

While Stern doesn't have a recollection of the conversation, he does remember how close he felt to her. On top of this, both their spouses (James Brolin and Beth Stern) let the two of them connect.

"She was very engaging. Very warm. Very interested in me. As I was in her. It was a very intimate conversation."

Despite their connection, Stenr claimed that Streisand ignored him (albeit not necessarily purposefully) the next year when they attended the same party. Still, in subsequent years, Stern attempted to get Streisand on his show. But their schedules never allowed until october 2023.

It's not exactly surprising that there is video footage out there of Howard Stern being critical of Barbara Streisand long before their October, 7th, 2023 interview on his show. After all, Stern went through a lengthy phase of targeting famous people in his bits. Although, there's little existing evidence of him bashing the Yentl star.

However, during an interview with Streisand's half-sister on her maternal side, Roslyn Kind, Stern brought up their complicated relationship. Of course, this was in 1994 and life has changed a lot since then.

"Your sister's a little cold to you."

"I know that from what I've read," Stern continued while speaking to the actor and singer/songwriter. Stern then referenced the rumors that Streisand wouldn't let Kind live with her when she was down on her luck. But these are rumors that Kind denies.

Kind did admit that she has to go through a middle-man to get tickets to Streisand's shows. While Stern thought this was a slap in the face, Kind understands how busy her half-sister is.

"My sister would never call an assistant," Stern said. "I don't feel [Barbra Striesand] treats you right."

"Are you very busy like my sister is?" Kind asked.

"I'm every bit as busy as [Streisand], plus I have young children and a wife, who need my attention every three seconds," Stern responded. "I'm every bit as busy as your sister, Barbra Streisand. But as busy as I am, if my sister calls up and [says], 'You gotta book? You gotta [whatever]? ..."

"She's always on the phone with you. Not the assistant," Stern's co-host Robin Quivers chimed in.

"I'm every bit as busy as her. All she does all day is avoid [her ex-husband] Elliott Gould," Stern said to Roslyn Kind.

"Your name is Rosyln Kind. You know what I call your sister? Barbra Unkind. That is disgraceful."

While Kind continued to defend her sister and the relationship the two share, Stern was clearly unimpressed. However, this was almost twenty years before he and Streisand connected at the party in The Hamptons and over thirty years before their bombshell 2023 interview on The Howard Stern Show.
