Howard Stern’s Insensitive Comments Made A Huge Star Hold A Grudge Against Him For Years

Now that Howard Stern has been a wildly popular radio host for many years, he has become very rich and led a fascinating life. For example, Howard has developed celebrity friendships, and he's had fascinating interactions with famous people. Michael Jackson once asked Howard to lead a protest, Donald Trump told the host about his prenup, and Matt Lauer told Howard he had a crush on Katie Couric. There were also more negative stories, like when Dolly Parton threatened to sue Howard.

Since Howard has been beaten up for his comments in the past, it isn't too surprising that he has made some stars angry. However, it is amazing that Howard made some comments that angered a movie star so much they held a grudge against him for years.

Why Chevy Chase Resented Howard Stern For Years

In 1992, Chevy Chase made an appearance on Larry King Live. When Larry was taking calls from viewers, someone simply remarked, "Howard Stern" before hanging up.

If it wasn't for the fact that Chevy resented Howard at the time, that prank call would have quickly been forgotten. However, as a clip on YouTube from "The Howard Stern Show" reveals, Chevy responded to the crank call by insulting Howard.

"Is that that guy, Howard Stern? Boy, he's an a**. Can't stand him... I've heard him on the radio. He's very funny. He got the brain of an egg timer."

Many years later, Chevy called into Howard's radio show, as can be heard in a separate YouTube video.

That clip starts with Howard stating that he believed Chevy wouldn't show up because of their past bad blood.

During their interview, Chevy explained why he was so angry at Howard that he called him out on Larry King Live.

Ever since Chevy Chase became a star, it has been well documented that he doesn't care about making enemies. As recently as December 2024, a Screen Rant article revealed that hadn't changed. That article revealed that during an episode of the "Fly on the Wall" podcast, Jason Reitman, the director of the biopic Saturday Night, revealed that Chevy brutally critiqued the film. "Well, you should be embarrassed."

Interestingly enough, Chevy was mad at Howard because of what the radio host said about his former co-star. When Chevy was filming Fletch Lives with Julianne Phillips, she was divorcing Bruce Springsteen at the time. As he explained to the radio host, Chevy resented Howard for the mean things he said about Julianne as she went through that divorce.

"I know why now. You called that we were shooting in Astoria, and you called and asked me a bunch of questions about [Julianne Phillips'] divorce. And at the time, I remember that I just didn't know who you were, but I remember that she was, like, crying every day because she was really going through it. You were very mean."

For those that don't know, Fletch Lives was released on March 17, 1989. That means that the movie was likely filmed in 1988 or the first month of 1989 at the latest.

According to IMDb, Fletch Lives was produced for $8 million and brought in more than $39.4 million at the worldwide box office.

Since Chevy called out Howard Stern while talking to Larry King in 1992, that shows that he held that grudge for at least three years. It is also worth noting that it is well-documented that Chevy was still angry at Howard in 1994, but that will be touched on more later in the article.

After Chevy explained why he resented Howard, the radio host responded by stating that he didn't know why Julianne would have been so upset about the divorce. "You know what was weird to me? She married the guy. She came out with it with a couple of million bucks. I don't know. I don't see and she's the one who left Springsteen."

After the radio host seemed to slightly defend his past conduct, Chevy again stated why he resented Howard for so long.

"I don't know whether a couple million bucks pays for all the emotions she was going through, but all I know is that I I was shooting this movie and I got this call and you started asking me these questions about her sex life or something. I just felt you were an a**."

Even though Chevy had just insulted him, Howard expressed that he was relieved to know why Chevy hated him.

"That's the only thing I ever wanted to know. I really had nothing against you. I always enjoyed your work. I mean, I really had no problem. And so, you know, I just never understood why I was such an a**."

Howard then brought up a previous time he tried to talk to Chevy about the tension between them. "When I tried to ask you about it, you got pissed off." Thankfully for Howard, Chevy stated he didn't resent him any longer. "It's water under the bridge for Christ's sake."

Howard Stern And Chevy Chase's Relationship Got Worse After Another Incident

After Chevy Chase's 1992 comments about Howard Stern to Larry King, the two men had an explosive interaction.

As can be heard in another YouTube video, Howard called Chevy's house during an episode of "The Howard Stern Show" in 1994. When Howard first called, a woman answered insisting he had the wrong number.

When Howard called back, Chevy's longtime wife, Jayni Luke, got on the phone. Jayni could be heard telling Howard that Chevy hadn't been badmouthing him.

However, Chevy could eventually be heard telling his wife to give him the phone. Once he took over the call, Chevy hung up in seconds after telling Howard off.

"Hey, Howard. Is this you? I got news for you. I didn't bad mouth you, but I do have some news for you. What? This is my home, and I don't like you. Okay? Is that clear? So don't call my home again."
