What Howard Stern Said About The Met Gala And Where The Money Is Donated

Howard Stern and his wife Beth have made themselves some of the most famous animal activists in the world. Together, they run Beth's Fury Friends through the North Shore Animal League. They also personally rescue countless cats and adopt them out of their home. In short, they put their money and their time where their mouths are. So, fans of SiriusXM's Howard Stern Show likely didn't brush off the radio legend's criticism of where the money from The Met Gala ends up going.

During Stern's May 7th broadcast, he brought up The Met Gala with his longtime co-host, Robin Quivers. The pair couldn't understand why the media make such a "big deal" about the annual event.

The Met Gala was established in 1948. The event takes place at the Metropolitan Museum Of Art in New York City. According to BBC, today a single-seat ticket costs $75,000 while tables typically go for $350,000. This is a huge difference from 1995 when a single-seat cost around $1,000. The event raises millions of dollars each year that goes directly to the Costume Institute exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. A-list celebrities are typically sponsored by major designers to walk the red carpet. But stars also have to pay their press, make-up, and hair team to prepare them for the outlandishly expensive event. However, due to the attention the Anna Wintour-led experience garners, most A-list stars believe that it's worth it.

"It seems as though it's a tremendous waste of time to me."

After claiming The Met Gala was "a waste of time", Stern said that Anna Wintour and the celebrities who attend do the event "under the guise of charity". Although, it should be stated that Stern did not mention the Vogue editor-in-chief and fashion icon by name. Stern was also surprised to learn which charity all of the money raised was donated to.

"I was like, 'Oh, they must do it for the homeless' or something like that. [But] the Gala in New York City raises funds for the Mets Costume Institute which exhibits fashion across centuries of confidence."

"What do they need money for?" Robin Quivers asked, laughing.

"I don't know. I guess to clean the outfits," Stern joked before reading an article aloud that claimed that the 2023 Met Gala raised $22 million. All of which was donated to the Costume Institute exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The 2024 Met Gala's funds, as per tradition since 1948, will be donated to the same place. Specifically to the exhibit entitled, "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion"

All of this seemed to irk Stern:

"Really? Isn't there a better charity? Like, I think what my wife is doing for animals [is better]. Give that money to that. Who f***ing cares about a museum of costumes? Wow. I mean, I don't know anyone who has ever been to that museum."

While Stern claimed he had never heard of the museum nor knew anyone who had been, Robin Quivers said she had. And it was none other than Stern's former stylist, Ralph Cirella, who passed away in December 2023.

"He went to the museums of costumes?"

"Yes," Quivers laughed.

"Yeah, well... okay, I didn't know that," Stern said before bashing where the money from the event goes once again.

"Doesn't the Museum of Costumes have a rich endowment, at this point, from all of these Met Galas?"

Later in his May 7th show on SiriusXM satellite radio, Howard Stern and his staffers bashed the outfits at the event. It started with the radio host and best-selling author claiming that he doesn't understand why anyone would want to spend all day getting ready just to be photographed in an uncomfortable outfit.

"Why would you waste a precious day or days?"

Throughout his incredible career, Stern has interviewed numerous celebrities about their experiences at The Met Gala. This includes a conversation with Billie Eilish who exposed the inner workings of the event. During his conversation, Stern claimed that his wife, Beth, would love to go but that he'd likely not accompany her. He just doesn't get the whole thing nor the appeal of Anna Wintour.

"Anna Wintour is some woman that women worship. I don't even know why."

Following this, Stern was handed the pictures of the best and worst-dressed celebrities at the 2024 Met Gala. After looking at them, he claimed that most of the stars looked "ridiculously odd". But he did think that one celebrity, in particular, looked incredible.

"I tell you what, Emily Ratajkowski was there, who was of course the naked woman in the [Alan Thicke] music video," Stern said.

"[Emily] shows up at this Met Gala. And she's like -- one thing I like about her is she's like 'f*** you'. There's a theme and you have to [follow it]. And she's like, 'F*** you, I'm going to show you my ti**ies and my f**ing a**, cause I've got a killer body. My theme is, I'm hot'. Look at that dress. She's naked."

Stern and Quivers agreed that Emily Ratajkowksi was the best-looking at the 2024 Met Gala because she was basically wearing nothing and showing off her figure.
