Let's take a closer look.
David Letterman's Interview With Howard Stern Was Recently Posted To The Late Show YouTube Channel, And A Jay Leno Moment Stood Out
It was posted to YouTube but taken down. Fans requested Letterman's chat with Howard Stern from 2013 back on the channel, and they got their wish. The interview from over a decade ago was posted in its entirety. Even looking back today, it does not disappoint. The two discuss several topics, and that includes what kick-started their own feud.
However, fans felt as though the interview took a massive shift after Howard Stern brought up Jay Leno. It seemed like Letterman was making up with Leno at the time, but Stern wasn't impressed by this decision.
Stern tells Letterman, "Can I bring up something? There's talk backstage about you all the time. I know I always bring up Jay Leno every time I come on here. But this is blowing my mind. Jay Leno recently said that you guys are now exchanging phone calls with one another."
Letterman answers, "We have spoken on the phone, yes."
Stern clearly wasn't pleased with the response. He says, "I'm out of here. I give up. I feel like I'm still in the jungle fighting your war. And you made up with Vietnam. I mean, what is this? Jay Leno will forever blow my mind. You had such a dream and Jay snatched it from you. I got so caught up in your drama. I love you."
Letterman then interjects and says, "Let's stop here," but Stern wants to continue the discussion.
The moment is definitely worth a look back on.
Re-posted to YouTube just a few days ago, fans had a lot to say looking back at the interview.
Fans Appreciated That The Interview Between Stern And Letterman Had No Cuts, Or Edits
Fans had plenty to talk about. Of course, the Jay Leno topic was discussed by fans. In addition, fans appreciated how raw the interview was, and how Stern was controlling things, even telling the producer not to take a commercial break.
Fans wrote, "This was the most directionless yet entertaining segment I think I've ever seen."
"Howard really took this over and gave it the energy of his radio show lol. I enjoyed every moment. Such different guys on pretty much every level yet there’s a certain chaotic chemistry between them."
"I loved watching this segment. It was uneasily great watching Dave’s body language change once Howard brought up Jay’s name. Howard is skilled at making people uncomfortable. And watching Dave switch from being the professional interviewer to having an actual conversation with Howard was uniquely enjoyable. Thanks for posting this."
A great interview and one that was very different to typical Late Show interviews. Credit to both Stern and Letterman for being very open about their feud in the past.
Both David Letterman And Howard Stern Have Been Open About Their Past Feud
Even in recent years, David Letterman has been revisiting his Howard Stern feud. Speaking with Jimmy Kimmel back in the fall of 2022, Letterman discussed their feud.
“I kept thinking to myself, he must not have any feelings of his own. He’d say hurtful things and the more hurtful things he’d say the greater his audience would become. I thought, ‘I’m in the wrong business.'”
As for Howard Stern, the host admitted he had anger issues, and was doing everything possible to make his show as controversial as possible.
"I was just a young man full of rage and I was angry. I was angry with you, that you were on television, that you had an audience. There was no rhyme or reason to it,” said Stern alongside David Letterman on My Next Guest Needs No Introduction. “I could not love anyone. I couldn’t respect anyone. I just thought this was who I was.”
He continues, “I could appreciate what you did for me. I had betrayed your trust and I was ashamed. The reality was: I loved you."
Howard Stern is clearly in a different place nowadays, and it is all for the best.
