Simon Helberg was already a popular actor in 2016, thanks to the CBS hit The Big Bang Theory, where he was almost written off. But Hugh Grant didn't know of his fame. That year, when they starred in the biographical flick Florence Foster Jenkins, the British actor who's been struggling with financial issues said he was initially "patronizing" to the TV star on set.

Eventually, they developed great onscreen chemistry, evident in their hilarious appearance on Alan Carr: Chatty Man. Grant got so drunk he started taking over the host's duties — interviewing a nervous Helberg who previously opened up about battling OCD. Here's a closer look at the pair's relationship.

A Drunk Hugh Grant Started Interviewing Simon Helberg On Alan Carr: Chatty Man

It was Helberg and Grant's first time drinking together on Alan Carr's show. Right off the bat, the latter asked the host for a glass of "Malibu and Pineapple," which he "bloody loved" the last time he was there. The former also had one when Carr offered. "What could go wrong?" said Helberg. The audience laughed. "We never did get drunk together," Grant said.

The host, who was pouring their drinks, warned them: "When they come on, they don't get short measures with me, love." Helberg looked nervous about the amount of alcohol in their glasses. Two minutes into the interview, Grant was already on his "grumpy" mode. When Carr asked if he'd do a sitcom with him, he bluntly answered, "No."

They then moved on to Helberg and Grant's experience with the "terrifying" Meryl Streep in Florence Foster Jenkins. "I thought he would be super cool," the former said of the latter, who described himself as "stuffed with calm" working with the three-time Oscar winner. But according to the Notting Hill star, Streep "might have been a bit nervous, too. Not of us, obviously."

He continued: "But I think she gets it's touching. There she is, with 18 Academy Award nominations, and I think on big days she was a bit nervous. Sometimes I had to hold her hand in a scene, and it was cold like a nervous person."

Before Carr could get a word in, Grant immediately turned to Helberg and asked, "Do you get nervous before your Big Bang?" The host cut in, pointing at his name on the show's logo and himself. "Not so chatty now, are you?" Helberg joked, to which Carr responded, "I'll get back to the kitchen, milord."

Taking back his duties, the comedian asked Grant to explain who Florence Foster Jenkins was, but the actor confessed, "I'm almost too drunk to speak now." That didn't stop Carr from topping up his drink.

Florence Foster Jenkins earned Meryl Streep her 16th Oscar nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role.

Helberg had barely touched his drink when Carr started refilling Grant's. It wasn't what made the former nervous. But it was certainly an interesting dynamic to watch. "It's adorable how talented Simon is and yet how nervous he is here," a fan wrote in the YouTube comments.

"I think after that first sip or 2, he went 'Okay, s--t... Bathroom. soon,'" someone added. "I would be too. I love Chatty Man, but what are even the drinks?! lol" Helberg was certainly quiet, but the few times he spoke were all comedy gold.

When Carr asked if he really played the piano in the movie, he said: "Yes, I did play. Those are my hands, and they're connected all the way to my brain. It works together most of the time." But it was Grant who spilled that Helberg "is a concert pianist from the age of six."

The coy sitcom actor said, "No, he's being kind. [I've been playing] from 10." He then returned the compliment to the Love, Actually star who he said "learned from scratch" but admitted "they had to put my fingers in the right places, and then I just learn it over and over again."

Hugh Grant didn't listen to music or owned any CDs before learning how to sing, play the piano, and dance, for Music and Lyrics alongside Drew Barrymore.

In an interview with Howard Stern, Grant admitted that he was "patronizing" to Helberg when they first met. He wasn't aware of the Big Bang craze or even the whole big deal about American TV. "Yeah, it was. It was stratospheric. I had no idea how much TV was worth here," he said at that time."

"This guy, Simon Helberg, who's in Florence Foster Jenkins, when he came over to work on the film, I might have been vaguely patronizing to him because he hadn't done films before," Grant said of his former co-star. The Bridget Jones's Diary alum realized, "Gradually [...] Not only is the guy [Helberg] a much bigger star than me, [but] he's maybe the richest man I've ever met."

Here are some of Helberg's notable films aside from Florence Jenkins:

2009

He played Rabbi Scott in the comedy thriller A Serious Man

2014

He played comedic leading man, Quinn in the rom-com, We'll Never Have Paris

2021

He played The Accompanist in Annette

2022

He played Nathan in As They Made Us alongside Dustin Hoffman

2022

He played Dimitir in Space Oddity alongside Kevin Bacon

In an interview with Conan O'Brien, Helberg shared that he and Grant both suffered from "panics" while filming. "I almost landed in the hospital from just anxiety attacks," said the Annette star.

"But I found out that Hugh, who is so debonair and charming, also panics all the time, and he had something called, I think, a 'panic sack' or something," he added.

Helberg revealed that the "sack" was "this Rescue Remedy [Grant] carried around with him, which is like a naturopathic. It's one of those things that has like the elderflower root and the dandruff of a wizard or something. Like memories of a Buddhist dwarf imbued. It's just nothing, it's water but you put it in your tongue [to calm you down]."

The actors bonded when Helberg realized that his wife had given him "cocaine vials of essential oils" that looked exactly like his co-star's calming potion. Of course, the former clarified that they weren't drugs, just "naturopathic patchouli" he'd put on his "chakras, and it's supposed to calm you down."

Simon Helberg's net worth is $55 million, while Hugh Grant's is $150 million.
