X-Men: Days of Future Past has been added to Disney+, the first X-Men film to show up on the platform despite Disney bought the rights to the films when they bought 20th Century Fox in 2019.
This is because, due to previous deals, the films have been on other streaming services. X-Men, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine on HBO Max, are two such films on the list to be added to the streaming service when their contracts expire.
Jackman's Post Pokes Fun At The Streaming Service
Wolverine star Hugh Jackman recently hung up his claws as Wolverine with his final appearance in 2017's Logan. His most recent role was as Frank Tassone in Bad Education.
Still, no longer "being" Wolverine didn't stop Jackman from making an Instagram post announcing the film's arrival to the streaming service, along with a bit of humor.
Jackman jokingly stated that the film is uncensored, referring to a scene in the film in which Jackman's nude butt is shown. The streaming service has been known to censor the films on its platform in order to keep in line with Disney's family-friendly reputation.
However, there appears to be a double standard - or at least an unclear set of standards. While some films have parts of the human body or curse words censored, other violent films make the cut unaltered. Avengers: Endgame, for example, features a decapitation with no censorship whatsoever.
Disney+ Censored Daryl Hannah's Butt
The specific film Jackman likely referred to is Splash, the 1984 film starring Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah. In one scene, Hannah appeared nude, although nothing intimate was actually shown on camera. As she runs away, while the sides of her butt can be seen, her long hair covers anything that might be deemed inappropriate.
However, this was still deemed too inappropriate for Disney+. Using CGI, Disney added even more hair to cover as much of Hannah's butt as possible. It did not go unnoticed: Twitter user Allison Pregler first posted the altered clip in April.
Newsweek posted a list of other censored movies on the platform, which highlights further confusing, seemingly random standards. Bart's penis can be seen in The Simpsons Movie, but an episode of the show was removed due to an appearance by Michael Jackson. Lilo & Stitch and The Lion King are also on the list of censored films, which is incredibly ironic, given that they were Disney films to begin with.
Along with this first X-Men installment of many, Disney+ also recently added a filmed version of the Broadway hit, Hamilton (which saw its own censorship controversy over having some of the language softened). Both films, plus many more listed here, are available to watch on the service now.
