Recently, Hulu dropped Candy, which stars Jessica Biel. It looks intriguing, but is it worth your time? Find out what people are saying below!
Jessica Biel's 'Candy' Just Debuted
Earlier in May, Candy made its official debut on Hulu. The biographical crime drama had some hype behind it, and people were interested in checking out what Hulu was bringing to the table.
Starring Jessica Biel, Melanie Lynskey, and Pablo Schreiber, Candy focuses on a suburban housewife accused of committing an unspeakable act.
Biel is also an executive producer on the project, and when speaking with ScreenRant, she dished on what made the story so interesting.
"Of course, the ending is just endlessly fascinating, right? How did she get acquitted is just still in my mind. I think, really, it's the telling of it; the way that the scripts were subtly and slowly showing you these mundane lives and these suburban existences. It was just a very different tone, and something that I didn't expect. The story is itself explosive and all of these things, but the way Robin and Nick and our wonderful directors wanted to tell the story - that was really the magic of this particular project," she said.
People have now had a chance to devour the project, and they've had plenty to say about it.
Critics Are Okay With It
At the time of this writing, Candy has a 71% with critics over on Rotten Tomatoes. That's a decent score, and while the majority of critics do enjoy it, the show has some problems that a number of professionals weren't able to look past.
John Anderson of The Wall Street Journal gave the show positive remarks, highliting the lead performances in the project.
"Both Ms. Biel and Ms. Lynskey are terrific and have a lot to do in making their respective characters into real people... The actresses are both playing women strangled not just by their culture but their own personalities, but somehow make them sing," Anderson wrote.
Movies and Shakers did note that the performances were strong, but that the show had some pacing issues that bogged it down.
"Jessica Biel in one of her best roles handles Candy well as a woman who thinks on her feet to get out of the tough relationships and situations she’s created for herself. The pace of these episodes is very slow. We almost tuned out after first episodes," they wrote.
While no performer wants to hear negative things about their project, it does have to feel nice to hear that their performance is strong. That said, the performances weren't enough for a good review, at least in the eyes of some critics.
A 71% isn't terrible, but it is only one piece of the puzzle.
Is It Worth Watching?
So, is Jessica Biel's Candy worth watching? The show currently has an overall average of 72.5%, indicating that it is worth checking out.
One thing to take note of is that the audience score (74%) is higher than the critics score. This shows that casual viewers enjoyed the project more than those paid to look at it through a critical lens.
One user on the site loved the project, and just like the critics, they touched on Biel's performance.
"WOW!! Just Amazing! Keeps you on your toes! Again WOW!! Just WOW!! She blew me away! To watch Jessica as Candy is just breathtaking! Her emotions, her facial expressions, and her demeanor! The show is so relatable, raw, organic, and orgasmic. In my opinion THIS SHOW IS A MUST SEE!," the user wrote.
Another user thought that it was intriguing, but had some issues with the cinematography.
"If it wasn't for some sunlight shining thru the windows during the movie, the entire screen would be a black out. We're there any lighting effects paid for this drama? Absolutely horrible filming, but the story line was intriguing," they wrote.
Based on reviews, Candy is worth the watch! Be sure to check it out and enjoy Biel's stellar performance.
