Katy Perry is one of the biggest pop stars in the world, with over 10 albums to her name. At the start of her career, Katy was releasing new music every couple of years, which is why she always had a single or two domineering the charts.
However, it’s been a hot minute since the pop star released new music, which has caused concern over whether she’s stepping away from singing. Here’s everything we know about the status of Katy’s music career.
Katy Perry’s Life Changed A Lot Since Becoming A Mom
It’s been nearly three years since Katy became a mother. She gave birth in August 2022 to a daughter, Daisy Dove, whom she shares with her fiancé Orlando Bloom. While this is the first child for the pop star, Orlando has an older son, Flynn, with his ex-wife Miranda Kerr.
Orlando and Katy announced their daughter’s birth via a post to UNICEF’s Instagram page.
"We are floating with love and wonder from the safe and healthy arrival of our daughter,” they wrote. “But we know we’re the lucky ones and not everyone can have a birthing experience as peaceful as ours was.”
The couple asked their followers to consider donating to UNICEF so that "every expecting mother has access to a trained health worker and access to quality healthcare.”
Katy didn’t take a long time off from her career following Daisy’s arrival. She released her latest album Smile the same month she gave birth, and didn’t shy away from the spotlight, including various promotional opportunities.
She even gave her first public performance in November 2020, only three months after giving birth.
In May 2021, Katy surprised fans by announcing her Las Vegas residency Play, which ran from December 29, 2021, to January 15, 2022, at The Theatre of Resorts World Las Vegas. Due to popular demand, Katy extended her residency, though it’s set to conclude in March 2023.
Before Giving Birth, Katy Said She Won’t Quit Music
Between the release of Smile and her Las Vegas residency, Katy has made a number of big career moves in recent years. However, she hasn’t confirmed if any new music is on the way since welcoming her daughter. This has sparked speculation over whether Katy is taking a hiatus from music.
While the pop star hasn’t addressed the recent rumors, she did assure fans a few months before giving birth that motherhood wouldn’t be an impediment to her career.
“Yeah, music, I’m never quitting that just because I’m going to be a mom,” she said in a livestream in April 2020.
She may not be leaving the music industry permanently, but it’s possible that Katy is taking a temporary break, which she has a history of doing. In 2018, the ‘Teenage Dreams’ songstress said she was stepping away from music after feeling burned out from touring.
“I feel like I’ve done a lot. I feel like I’ve rung the bell of being a pop star very loudly, and I’m very grateful for that,” she said at the time. “I’ve been on the road for like 10 years, so I’m just going to chill.”
She continued, “I didn’t really pay attention to anything besides my craft — which is great, and I love it. I love making music, I love writing. But I don’t feel like I’m a part of a game anymore; I just feel like I’m an artist.”
Katy added, “I don’t feel like I have to prove anything [anymore], which is a freeing feeling.”
It’s possible that Katy was faced with similar feelings of being overwhelmed after having her baby, which could explain why she hasn’t been in a rush to release new music.
Without A Nanny, Katy Perry Has Her Hands Tied With Her Family
It’s not only her daughter that’s taking up a lot of attention – Katy is also in the midst of wedding planning, which is another factor that could explain why she’s slowed down her career.
Orlando and Katy were reportedly planning to tie the knot in 2019, only to postpone their plans when they couldn’t secure their dream venue.
“They changed the timing due to the location they want,” a source said at the time, adding, “They’re beyond in love.”
They were then planning to have the wedding in Japan in 2020, though the plans were derailed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Since then, they’ve reportedly been adjusting to parenthood while slowly trying to plan their nuptials.
Katy has also admitted that she doesn’t have a full-time nanny, meaning she’s balancing her career, motherhood, and wedding planning all on her own.
"I am working a lot, and I've always worked a lot," the singer previously explained. "I have a wonderful nanny, but I don't have a full-time nanny because I feel like if I had a full-time nanny then I would never be able to know how to care for my daughter like I'm meant to."
Given her previous comments, it’s unlikely that Katy is quitting music for good, though she’s likely taking things slow given everything else she has going on in her life.
Fans may not have a timeline for when they can expect new music, but there’s no reason to suggest Katy is going anywhere.
