With a $400 million net worth, Mark Wahlberg knows a thing or two about making money. Be it with his movies, or his endorsements, Wahlberg has earned a fortune through the years.
With this type of money to his name, the acclaimed actor has little more to do in the movie business. Having done it all, Wahlberg seems to be at a place in his career where he is not starring in as major blockbusters anymore, choosing to focus on projects that he prefers. Because of this, as well as some of his recent comments, people have started to wonder just how much longer we will see him in front of the cameras.
Let's take a look at how things have slowed down for Mark Wahlberg, what he has said about retiring, and what his legacy in the film industry looks like.
Mark Wahlberg Is An Oscar-Nominated Actor, Whose Output Is Not What It Used To Be
Mark Wahlberg started his career in the limelight as Marky Mark, the frontman of the hip-hop group Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. Their hit single, "Good Vibrations," released in 1991, catapulted him to fame in the music world. While his music career was relatively short-lived, it served as a stepping stone for his entry into acting.
Wahlberg's transition from music to acting was a smooth one. It was his performance in Boogie Nights, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, that garnered critical acclaim. Wahlberg portrayed Dirk Diggler, a role that showcased his acting chops and set the stage for his future success.
One of the defining moments of Mark Wahlberg's acting career came with his role in Martin Scorsese's crime thriller The Departed. The film, featuring an ensemble cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, and Jack Nicholson, received widespread critical acclaim and won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Wahlberg's performance as Sergeant Sean Dignam earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
In more recent years, Wahlberg's output in major films has dipped. Yes, he has continued to act, but not nearly at the same level that his fans once enjoyed.
To complicate things, the actor recently made some comments about his future that hints at the end coming sooner rather than later.
Mark Wahlberg Hinted That His Acting Career Could Be Ending
In a conversation with Cigar Aficionado, the actor opened up about his future in acting.
"Well, I’m certainly working harder now than ever. Certain businesses, you kind of build them, pass them on or you exit. Hopefully my kids, we’ll see what their interests are, but I don’t think that I’ll be acting that much longer at the pace I am now. That’s for sure. Because that’s the most difficult thing."
During that same interview, Wahlberg also opened up about his shift to producing many projects, something he has shown a proficiency with.
"I didn’t want to sit around waiting for Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise or whoever was already established before me and were the guys at the time, and Leo [DiCaprio] to go and pass on a movie until I could get my hands on it. I was always proactive in trying to find material and things that I could produce, that I knew was right for me, create my own destiny," he said.
According to Us Weekly, this is not the only time that the actor has mentioned calling it a career, especially since his family relocated to Las Vegas to get a fresh start.
"To be able to give my kids a better life and follow and pursue their dreams, whether it be my daughter as an equestrian, my son as a basketball player, my younger son as a golfer, this made a lot more sense for us. We came here to just kind of give ourselves a new look, a fresh start for the kids, and there’s lot of opportunity here. I’m really excited about the future," Wahlberg previously said.
If Wahlberg was to call it a day, he'd do so with a fortune, and with some fantastic films to his name.
