Breaking Bad is one of TV's greatest shows, and it's all thanks to creator, Vince Gilligan. Gilligan's life was quite different before Breaking Bad, but once he got the right recipe, he became a powerhouse creator on TV that amassed a fortune.
Over time, Gilligan has added to the Breaking Bad universe, creating a thriving small-screen franchise. His most recent series Better Call Saul, has signaled the end of an era, and fans want to know if Gilligan will continue expanding his small-screen universe.
Let's hear what the man himself had to say!
Vince Gilligan Is The Creator Behind 'Breaking Bad'
January 2008 marked the debut of Breaking Bad on AMC. The series, which was created by Vince Gilligan, was a whirlwind success that blossomed into one of the greatest TV shows ever made.
Things got off to a slow start for Gilligan, who struggled to find a home for the show.
"Gilligan's agent met with AMC's director of original programming but there needed to be a formal pitch. After various meetings, Gilligan didn't have much hope left; however, he won over the AMC executives who were highly intrigued by Breaking Bad," ScreenRant wrote.
Starring Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, and a gang of talented stars, Breaking Bad was a series that benefited tremendously from its outstanding cast. The show was already working with stellar writing, but the collective performance of the cast is what really took things to another level.
While on the air, Breaking Bad because a pop culture sensation. It managed to become one of the biggest shows on TV; a must-see event that dominated its time slot each week. Thanks to the favor that it earned from critics and audiences, it cemented its place in history.
Somehow, someway, Gilligan was able to craft another brilliant show set within the same universe.
'Better Call Saul' Was A Brilliant Follow-Up
In 2015, Better Call Saul made its official debut on AMC, and it carried the weight of unrealistic expectations on its back. Despite following up one of the greatest shows of all time, this series managed to stand on its own as a masterpiece of modern television.
During its time on air, Better Call Saul has been a blast for fans, both old and new. It was able to take something familiar, and send it into unexpected places, all while maintaining the same level of quality that fans have grown accustomed to.
2022 marks the final season of Better Call Saul on AMC, and fans are genuinely sad to see it going away. The final season has been everything fans were hoping for and more, something that Gilligan seems to excel at.
Now that the incredible show is going the way of its predecessor, people want to know if Vince Gilligan is going to expand the universe that he crafted.
The Is 'Breaking Bad' Universe Going To Expand?
So, what are Vince Gilligan's plans for the Breaking Bad universe? Unfortunately, fans aren't going to like what he's had to say about it.
"The Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul universe is coming to end, according to co-showrunners Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould. Gilligan and Gould, speaking on the show’s final virtual TCA panel, said that they have no plans to add another show to the AMC shared universe, although cautioned “never say never,'" Deadline reports.
The site then provide a quote from Gilligan.
"You can’t keep putting all your money on red 21. I feel like we probably pushed it doing a spinoff to Breaking Bad [but] I could not be more happy with the results. Then I did El Camino and I’m very proud of that too. But I think I’m starting to sense you’ve got to know when to leave the party, you don’t want to be the guy with a lampshade on your head," he said.
It's understandable that Gilligan is ready to move on. He's been cashing in on the brand for years now, and thanks to its enduring place in pop culture, he will continue to do so for years on end.
"I don’t have any plans right now to do anything more in this universe. I know I probably gave the same answer at the end of Breaking Bad. I gotta prove to myself that I got something else in me. I’m not a one trick pony, that’s what I’m hoping," he added.
The Breaking Bad universe looks to be done for good. If that's the case, then it's been one heck of a ride.
