Jason Bateman Appeared In A Bad Mood On Stephen Colbert

When it was time for Jason Bateman to appear on Stephen Colbert's talk show, the actor appeared to be off his game. Whereas he is typically highly talkative, his answers came off a bit differently.

As a professional, Stephen Colbert didn't pry into the change in demeanor from Jason Bateman but instead continued on with the interview.

Although fans may not notice anything different with the actor, when viewers watched through the interview once more they could see where Bateman was fidgeting more than what is normal and seemed to be a bit abrupt when answering questions.

Without that second glance, however, people wouldn't understand that the interview was anything other than normal.

As someone who has been in the public eye ever since he was a child, Jason Bateman knows how to professionally participate in an interview. Therefore, these slight deviations from the norm were very much unlike him, which is how Colbert knew something was up.

The Things

Later On, Colbert Discovered Why

In the past, Jason Bateman has not hesitated to call late-night hosts out for things such as improper language in front of children. Being that he didn't say anything of the sort to Colbert, the host could safely assume the attitude wasn't because of something he did.

The real reason for Jason Bateman's bad mood came much later when it was disclosed to Stephen Colbert that the frequent moving while in the chair and the shortness in his answers resulted from the fact that he wasn't wearing underwear during the interview.

But why was he not wearing underwear?

To that end, Jason Bateman disclosed on an episode of his podcast SmartLess that the reason for his hostility and defensiveness while he was a guest on the show was because of a much bigger issue that happened behind the scenes.

His change in mood started out because he was wearing a suit that was too tight and thought that if he just released a bit of pressure it would fit a bit better, and he would be more comfortable on stage.

Unfortunately, as he proceeded to release said pressure through a fart, the results were not as he thought they would be. Instead of just gas, he unfortunately soiled his pants.

At that specific time, he had the makeup artist knocking on the door and the stage crew announcing they were ready for him to be walking to the stage.

He had to quickly think of something to do, which was to remove the underwear and hide them at the bottom of a garbage can before redressing and going onstage commando.

To Rectify The Situation, Colbert Took Matters Into His Own Hands

After finding out the real reason for Jason Bateman's change in temperament, Colbert couldn't help but to laugh about the encounter both on the podcast episode in which it was disclosed and with Bateman's friend and podcast co-host Sean Hayes.

Now understanding the reason for how he was acting on his late night show, Colbert knew that he couldn't let it slide.

Jason Bateman appeared on Colbert's show in 2018 and the late night host appeared as a guest on SmartLess in 2021, which is when he found out the real reason behind the bad mood.

After wrapping up the podcast episode, Colbert started to hatch a plan for how to pay Jason Bateman back. However, his final decision involved all three SmartLess actors.

Stephen Colbert purchased brand-new underwear for the three men and had it sent to them as a commemoration of Jason Bateman's experience on the late night television series. The gesture had such an impact that Sean Hayes even sported a pair when he visited Stephen Colbert a brief time later when he was on the show as a special guest.

Thankfully, Jason Bateman and Stephen Colbert are true comedians and can laugh off any situation. As they went through the event on the podcast, with Will Arnett guiding the conversation, the laughter and humility were highly present.

Therefore, it was clear that Stephen Colbert wasn't offended by how Jason Bateman responded to questions on his show and Bateman was open to telling the whole story, even if he was pressured to do so by his good friend Will Arnett.
