Since Survivor premiered in the year 2000, Jeff Probst has hosted every episode of the long-lasting reality show, which is why he may be the most important host ever. As a result, even new fans who are figuring out which seasons to watch first will know that Jeff has been there to witness all the show's most notable moments. Jeff was there to host the best seasons ever, he watched the greatest players ever compete, and he got to announce every winner.

Jeff has also been there for many of Survivor's most memorable moments, including when players have been medically evacuated. Despite witnessing all of those moments, there is only one Survivor scene that has made Jeff cry every time he watches it.

Jeff Probst Cries Every Time He Sees Eva Erickson And Joe Hunter's Memorable Survivor 48 Scene

Of course, everyone knows that Jeff is Survivor's host and most fans know that he has a lot of control over the casting process. However, the thing that a lot of fans seem to forget is that Jeff also plays a major role in Survivor's post-production process too.

During the post-production process, Jeff will see moments from the episodes multiple times. Because he has repeatedly watched it, Jeff could reveal that seeing Eva Erickson and Joe Hunter's memorable Survivor 48 scene makes him cry every time.

During the fifth episode of Survivor 48, fans saw Eva Erickson have what she calls an episode. Prior to that, Eva had told Joe Hunter that she'd been diagnosed as being autistic and coached him on how to help her if she ever had an episode. As a result of that prior conversation, Joe was able to be there and give Eva what she needed at that moment to help her episode pass.

Why Survivor 48’s Star Toomey Has Had A Heartbreaking Journey On The Show

It has been heartbreaking to see Survivor 48’s Star Toomey journey so far.

When fans watch Survivor, it is very easy to forget how many incredibly talented people work tirelessly to make the show happen.

In April 2025, TheThings journalist Matthew Thomas exclusively interviewed Richard Hatch. During that discussion, Richard expressed frustration that Jeff Probst put Joe Hunter on the spot by asking if he wanted to go help Eva Erickson. "Jeff's involvement there was so problematic on so many levels. What's Joe going to say, first of all? 'Would you like to go give her a hug?' says Probst? Come on. 'No. I wouldn't.' You know? Joe's not gonna say that."

While talking to Entertainment Weekly, Jeff took a moment to praise all the people who helped capture the Eva and Joe moment.

"It goes all the way back to our casting team bringing us Eva, believing she was ready for this kind of adventure. To our director and cinematography teams who captured those shots, to our audio teams who captured those beautiful words. To the score and the sound mix. And, of course, our producing and editing teams who worked so hard on this moment so that we could take the viewer inside the emotion of one of the most powerful exchanges between humans we have ever seen. And, of course, our incredible support teams that keep the Survivor engine running day after day. It literally takes a village."

From a production standpoint, the way that the scene with Eva and Joe was captured is amazing. Between the music and some of the shots that were included, it makes sense that so much effort was put into making that moment all it could be.

That said, Jeff stated he watched that scene more than any other and that the moment makes him cry each time he sees it. Those two statements certainly make it seem like the editing process would have been very emotionally taxing for him.

While talking to Entertainment Weekly, Joe stated that he wanted to be able to watch the episode air with Eva, but that wasn't possible. Instead, Joe told the outlet that he watched the scene with his family. Then, Joe explained that his daughter's reaction to the moment meant the world to him.

"I wanted nothing more than to be with her, but with my kiddos, duty calls. And my daughter loves Eva and has latched onto her and just sees herself in her. My daughter really is a spitting image of her. It's a trip and she's just a beast. And my daughter just said, 'That's my daddy.' She was proud. So my cup is full. That's the best way to put it is when you get that moment where your kids are genuinely proud of you, and they got to see Eva succeed — it was all positive things."

While talking to Entertainment Weekly, Eva explained that she watched the moment with her parents, best friend, and boyfriend. Eva then described how she felt watching the scene and seeing how her loved ones reacted to the moment.

"I felt so proud to have these people who I love with me and holding the hands of my best friend and my boyfriend and my parents, like everyone looking at me and just being so proud, and it felt amazing. And I'll never have an experience like that again, just to feel so loved by those that I'm surrounded by."

Eva also revealed that seeing the moment made her usually stoic boyfriend openly cry. "Seeing my boyfriend who, he never cries, and watching the tears stream down his face."
