Let's take a closer look.
Chuck Lorre Refused To Put A Label On Sheldon, But Jim Parsons Revealed It Was Clear Sheldon Showed Signs Of Asperger’s
Looking back, The Big Bang Theory left several questions unanswered and up for interpretation. The Big Bang Theory book made a few revelations, and that included Sheldon possibly having autism, and traces of Asperger's. However, Chuck Lorre stated that the writers were very careful with this, and didn't want to put a label on it.
“We did not want to put a label on Sheldon, because with that comes a responsibility of authenticity … which should be respected. I think not having a label gave Jim a great deal of more freedom to play the part as he wanted to play it, as opposed to how we might have been pressured to do for a very-real syndrome that can be difficult.”
As for Jim Parsons, the actor felt differently. He said that although the writers didn't want to flat out say it, the symptoms were pretty obvious in Sheldon.
The actor revealed, "The more I read up on Asperger’s, I was like, Well, the writers can say no, but Sheldon sure has a lot of the same traits.”
He continues, “I really took it as the writers wanting to celebrate and utilize certain aspects of someone on the spectrum, but were not interested in carrying the responsibility they would feel."
It truly was one of the many mysteries of Sheldon throughout the series. Another one dealt with his sexuality at one point, which was unknown prior to Sheldon meeting Amy.
Chuck Lorre Revealed The Plan For Sheldon At The Start Was To Make Him Asexual
For the longest time, Sheldon's sexuality was kept quiet on the show. According to Chuck Lorre, early on the goal was to keep Sheldon asexual. Meaning his only interest would be with science, and nothing else.
“I had, for several years, championed the idea that Sheldon was asexual. He had no interest, which I thought made him remarkable. Sheldon just didn’t care [about girls]. He was not attracted to anybody. He was attracted to science. There was kind of a sense that we had our own lane; that no one else was doing this.”
Lorre continues, “Sheldon was complete without a relationship. And that broke ground a little bit, along with the fact that he could articulate those wishes. He was not unconsciously avoiding contact with people. He looked at it, he analyzed it, and said, ‘I want no part of this.’ Science was his mistress."
However, once Amy entered the picture, things took a turn. Given how sensitive it was to Sheldon's character, Lorre and the writers made sure to ease the transition in, and not rush the storyline.
“[When we] … eventually did enter Sheldon into a relationship … we did it very slowly, and in a way that made us feel like we hadn’t done a 90-degree turn at all.”
Amy's introduction certainly made things interesting for fans.
Hugging Penny Was A Huge Character Moment For Sheldon On The Big Bang Theory
Sheldon had other breakthrough moments on the show and, according to Executive Producer Steve Holland, one of them was Sheldon and Penny's hug. Given how closed off Sheldon was, matched with being the opposite of Penny, it made for quite the moment and one that fans loved.
“We found out early on that Sheldon and Penny were a powerhouse combination. There was something very funny and sweet about that relationship. I think some of our best scenes were those two. They were so opposite, and they frustrated each other, but there was this deep, deep love.”
Jim Parsons also admitted how impactful the scene was.
“The construction of the scene was more moving to me than the joyous ecstasy that the character was going through. The emotion I feel even as I talk about it now has to do with the chill it gave me that they put something like that together. This was a character who displayed so few emotions, especially early on, and the writers came up with the most ridiculous trigger for him to finally reveal emotion and to such a degree that he was compelled to hug Penny. It was a wonderful moment to get to do it because we had just enough history and information behind us."
The relationship between Penny and Sheldon certainly made the show that much better.
