Hollywood stars Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck might just be one of the industry's most romantic love stories. As fans know, in January 2004 the couple called off their engagement after having been together for almost two years. Both of them went on to have other relationships, but it seems as if they remained in touch over the years.
In April 2021, news broke of Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck rekindling their romance, almost 20 years after their first engagement. This time around, however, they seem to be doing things slightly differently, and Affleck's second proposal was certainly much more down to earth. How does Jennifer Lopez feel about that? Keep on scrolling to find out!
How Did Ben Affleck Propose To Jennifer Lopez?
As fans know, Ben Affleck proposed to Jennifer Lopez twice. The first time was in November 2022, and not much is known about the way Affleck popped the big question back then. However, in an interview with ABC, Lopez did reveal some details about the proposal. When asked whether she is engaged, Lopez (who was 33 at the time) replied with "Yes," adding that the proposal was "traditional, but also in a very spectacular way, as of course Ben would do it … it was very, very beautiful." For the first proposal, Ben Affleck opted for a pink-diamond solitaire he chose himself which was custom-made by jeweler Harry Winston.
While not many details of the "spectacular" proposal from 2002 are known, it certainly seems as if Ben Affleck decided to do things in a more simple manner in 2022. In her newsletter On the JLo in a note to fans titled How It Went Down, Jennifer Lopez revealed just how Ben Affleck proposed 20 years after their first engagement. "Saturday night while at my favorite place on earth (in the bubble bath), my beautiful love got on one knee and proposed," Lopez revealed. This time around, Ben Affleck proposed with a reportedly 8.5-carat natural green diamond worth an estimated $10 million.
Of course, while there is nothing wrong with a low-key proposal, it is no secret that the rich and famous tend to go above and beyond when they decide to pop the big question — Kravis being the latest couple to have a fairytale proposal.
This Is How Jennifer Lopez Feels About The Low-Key Proposal
Of course, anyone who keeps up with Jennifer Lopez and her career knows that the diva loves living a luxurious and over-the-top lifestyle. Because of this, many wonder whether J-Lo was secretly disappointed by Affleck's rather simple way to pop the big question. After all, doing it while in a bubble bath certainly doesn't seem like a thoroughly thought out plan.
However, Jennifer Lopez did open up about how she felt about the proposal. "I was taken totally off guard and just looked in his eyes smiling and crying at the same time trying hard to get my head around the fact that after 20 years this was happening all over again. I was quite literally speechless, and he said, ‘Is that a ‘yes?'," Lopez revealed. "Green has always been my lucky color and now, for sure, it always will be. I was smiling so big and tears were coming down my face, feeling so incredibly happy and whole. It was nothing fancy at all, but it was the most romantic thing I could’ve ever imagined… just a quiet Saturday night at home, two people promising to always be there for each other. Two very lucky people. Who got a second chance at true love"
Judging from how happy Jennifer Lopez is, it seems as if she wasn't disappointed by the simple proposal at all. It seems as if this time around, the couple is trying to remain more grounded and big, over-the-top gestures certainly don't seem to impress either of them anymore. After over 20 years in the show business, it's not surprising that the two just want to have a normal life.
In an interview with People magazine, Jennifer Lopez admitted that the relationship feels much different this time around. "It's beautiful the way it feels very different than it was years ago. ... There's more of an appreciation and a celebration for it, which is nice," Lopez, said. "When you find somebody and you really, really love them and you get a second chance at that? That is a really rare, precious, beautiful thing and we don't take it for granted." The actress and musician also added that the two are aware of the things that went wrong the first time around — and that they won't let that happen again. "We both were like, 'Wow, we're so happy and we don't want any of that to come into play again.' We're older now, we're smarter, we have more experience, we're at different places in our lives, we have kids now, and we have to be very conscious of those things. We're so protective because it is such a beautiful time for all of us."
