Laughter tends to be very contagious, and that's also true for some of the biggest stars in Hollywood. On multiple occasions, we've seen interviews completely derailed because of laughter that just cannot be stopped. Bradley Cooper and Jimmy Fallon are a classic example. The two couldn't stop laughing on The Tonight Show after Bradley Cooper's description of his play at the time.
Fans also got to see the lighter side of Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence both bursting into laughter because of Jonah Hill's secret device.
In the following, we'll take a closer look at what went down between Anne Hathaway and Jon Stewart. Hathaway was promoting her film Song One at the time, and it seems like her description of the film was a little too 'sudden'. We'll reveal what took place, while also looking back at another Hathaway interview that was completely derailed by the host.
Anne Hathaway Wasn't Always Eager To Promote Her Films, And That Was Especially True During Her Interview With Matt Lauer Discussing Les Misérables
Looking back, Hathaway's interview with Jon Stewart was much more enjoyable than her chat with Matt Lauer on Today. At the time, Anne Hathaway underwent a wardrobe malfunction which leaked out to the press. Matt Lauer wasted no time letting that be known. He says at the start, "Nice to see you. Seen a lot of you lately."
Hathaway instantly responded that she'd rather be home than promote the film. “I’d be happy to stay home, but the film.”
Lauer was insistent on asking the question. He wanted to know what lesson Hathaway learned from the ordeal... Anne did her best to answer the question.
She said, “It kind of made me sad on two accounts. One was that I was very sad that when we live in an age where someone takes a picture of another person in a vulnerable moment, and rather than delete it and do the decent thing, sells it. And I’m sorry that we live in a culture that commodifies the sexuality of unwilling participants. Which brings us back to Les Mis.”
Hathaway received lots of praise for how she handled things throughout the interview. Mindy Kaling in particular praised Anne, while bashing Lauer for the question.
Anne Hathaway's Gruesome Explanation Of The Plot Had Herself And Jon Stewart Laughing Uncontrollably
At the time of her appearance alongside Jon Stewart on The Daily Show, Hathaway was promoting her latest film at the time, Song One. Her appearance on the show turned into a memorable one, as the guest and host just could stop laughing at a particular response issued by Hathaway.
When describing the film, let's just say Hathaway took an aggressive and abrupt approach. Her description turned out to be brutal, but hilarious at the same time given how unexpected it was.
Hathaway tells Stewart, "Her little brother, who is 19, calls her up and says 'I'm dropping out of college to become a musician,' and she doesn't react very well. And then they haven’t spoken for six months and then he gets hit by a car and is in a coma."
Obviously, the plot sounded pretty ridiculous given the way Anne Hathaway broke things down and for that reason, Stewart couldn't help but to laugh. Upon realization, Hathaway couldn't get a hold of herself either. Both had lots of fun in the moment, while it likely also took the edge off Hathaway having to promote her film.
Anne Hathaway Was Promoting Song One At The Time, And Had A Positive Experience On The Film
For Hathaway, the project was extra special given that she was also taking on the new role of a producer at the time in Song One. Hathaway discussed her enjoyment in the new role with Variety.
“I really loved producing. I loved being able to support a filmmaker in a way beyond acting in a movie. I learned that the goal is the same whether I am an actor or a producer — that I will do anything to get the director’s vision.”
Hathaway was originally set for a behind the scenes role on the film, but couldn't help but to join the cast given her connection to the script. She also credits the other producers behind the scenes for not making her take on too much of a workload behind the scenes.
“I feel like I got a gentle introduction to producing because I have a team of producers, two of whom are film veterans. Marc Platt and Jonathan Demme never gave me more than what I could handle,” she said. “I always felt supported, and a few weeks before we started filming, Jonathan Demme pulled me over to the side and said, ‘You should focus on acting now. We got this.’ And he did.”
The film ended up receiving mixed reviews at best, while it failed to hit the million dollar mark at the box office, making under $500,000.
