It’s another win for Britney Spears, as a judge has determined the singer won’t have to sit for a deposition, as her father was requesting.Even though Britney’s decade-long conservatorship was terminated in November (and her dad was removed as conservator in September), the pair are still fighting over fees connected to the conservatorship and legal costs.
The Judge Sided With Britney & Told Jamie He’s Wasting Time
However, Judge Brenda Penny ruled that making the singer sit for questioning is unlikely to produce any relevant information to the case.
Britney’s lawyer Mathew Rosengart previously argued against subjecting her to a deposition, saying it would “retraumatize” her after years of abuse under the controversial conservatorship.
In June, Jamie’s team requested Britney sit for a deposition to review claims she made on social media and in her upcoming memoir.
"Britney’s own publicly-posted Instagram posts aimed at Jamie and soon to be publicly-published book directly contradict Britney’s counsel’s claim that Britney has no admissible evidence and that her testimony is not reasonably calculated to lead to the discovery of admissible evidence," they argued.
However, Jamie Will Sit For His Own Deposition
Britney’s lawyers simultaneously requested Jamie sit down for a deposition to answer questions about the singer’s money. He was in charge of his daughter’s finances as conservator but has been accused of mishandling it and dwindling her fortune.
Her team went so far as to claim Jamie was “hiding” from the deposition, since they couldn’t locate him.
“Despite his demonstrably false claims that he has ‘nothing to hide’ and would therefore ‘hide nothing,’ James P. Spears has been running and hiding from his deposition and accounting for his misconduct — under oath — as required by law,” they said.
Judge Brenda Penny eventually approved the motion to depose Jamie. It’s unclear when he’ll have to testify.
While Britney has made various claims about her conservatorship online and in-court, she’s expected to go into more detail than ever in her new memoir. After several offers, the pop star signed a $15 million deal with Simon & Schuster to publish her memoir. However, the memoir is reportedly worrying her father, who’s fearful of the public backlash he’ll receive from her account.
Since the end of her conservatorship, Britney has married her long-time boyfriend Sam Asghari. She previously testified that her conservatorship was preventing her from getting married and removing her birth control. Both Britney and Sam have been vocal about their desire to have a family.
