Throughout its 12 season run, The Big Bang Theory was generally light-hearted. Though on the flip side, it could also be edgy. That was the case with the show's opening scene, showing Leonard and Sheldon at the sperm bank. It turned out to be a moment Chuck Lorre regretted.
Kaley Cuoco was also at the center of a few intimate scenes, mostly alongside Johnny Galecki. At one point, Cuoco thought it was being purposely done by Chuck Lorre for a specific reason. We'll reveal what that was, and how Lorre reacted to the bold claims.
In addition, we'll reveal another scene Cuoco took exception to, but Lorre still decided to shoot.
Let's take a closer look.
Kaley Cuoco Thought Chuck Lorre Purposely Added Intimate Scenes After Splitting From Johnny Galecki
The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series revealed a lot of information fans didn't know about, and that included Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki falling in love. Only a select few from the cast were aware of the romance. Sadly, the two ended up splitting, but it all worked out in the end, as they did so on amicable terms.
However, Cuoco noticed an increase in Penny's intimate scenes following the break-up. She felt as though Chuck Lorre was playing a joke on both herself and Johnny Galecki.
"I remember being very, very emotional during that episode, and especially during those specific scenes. I think I needed to cry."
She continues, "All of a sudden, we started noticing there were extra makeout scenes for our characters, and/or sex scenes. I was like, ‘I think Chuck is f******* with us!’”
Cuoco adds, "We were convinced. Convinced! Like, Yeah, they want to date and break up on my show, well, here you go! And he was writing all the little doodads in there."
Even Johnny Galecki admitted it made sense for the story, but still felt as though it was a "timely accident" by Lorre.
"Even though it was organic for the characters, I think he would f*** with us. [Laughs] If it was an accident, it was a very timely accident."
Lorre did respond to the claims, but mentioned he didn't have the time to purposely orchestrate such a plan.
Chuck Lorre Revealed It Was Never His Intent To Add More Intimate Scenes With Kaley Cuoco And Johnny Galecki
Chuck Lorre did answer the claims and as expected, given the tight shoot schedule, he did not have the time to muster up such a plan for more intimate scenes.
"No. Not at all," Lorre said about the claims.
"Making a good show has no room for messing with anybody. There’s no Let’s mess with Kaley and Johnny. The goal was to make a great show and make every minute of every episode count. And that was the only goal. We don’t have that kind of freedom to risk a TV series that you put your heart and soul into to mess with somebody’s head. No. But I think that’s charming that they think we had the mental capacity to mess with them. [Laughs] Penny and Leonard having difficulty sustaining a relationship was one of the reasons to keep watching—to see if they could make it. You were rooting for them to find happiness."
Cuoco and Galecki also added that it was "egotistical" of them to think of such a scenario.
Galecki said, "I guess that was pretty egotistical of us to think that. [Laughs] We were reading into things a little too much. I’m going to sleep a little easier tonight."
Cuoco adds, "You are right, that’s so self-involved of us. But I am glad we know now because Johnny and I have joked about that for a long time. He’s right, though—he was too busy to fuck with us! I’m glad we don’t have to bring that up anymore."
However, there was a certain scene in the show Cuoco did in fact take issue with. Lorre admitted he was wrong about the scene, but still kept it in.
Chuck Lorre Did Have A Regret For A Scene Kaley Cuoco Hated
Kaley Cuoco wanted a certain scene removed, but Chuck Lorre was adamant about keeping it. The scene required Cuoco to be covered in hair, and let's just say she wasn't thrilled about the idea. She called it the "worst experience."
“The worst experience was filming Serial Apeist and getting covered in hair from head to toe,” she says. “I was like, ‘Really, you guys? This is what’s happening?’ And Chuck just thought it was so funny. He loved it. I never understood why.”
Looking back, Lorre admitted it wasn't the show's finest moment.
"We wanted Penny to have some small success in her from of being a successful actor, but it’s not my favorite episode,” he explains. “Doing a show within a show — writing the ‘bad’ scenes that she’s in an otherwise good show — was not our finest moment. The goal was legitimate, which was to put her in a bad move and see her struggling to make something work.”
A tough day at the office for Kaley.
