Film critics often call her one of the most "preeminent actresses of her generation." Kate Winslet has been acting since she was a teenager and has been in timeless classics that people still watch today. Her big breakout was when she starred in the legendary Titanic film with Leonardo DiCaprio. Although that wasn't her first feature film, it was definitely the one that got her noticed in Hollywood and she continued to become more and more successful after that.
She has had tons of nominations for her performances over the years, including a few Academy Award nominations, and she's won multiple awards throughout her career too. With her ability to portray a variety of characters (with different accents), it's no wonder why she's won so many awards. Here are all of the awards Kate Winslet has won for her most iconic roles.
7 ‘Mare Of Easttown’ (2021) - 3 Wins And 5 Nominations
Mare of Easttown is Kate Winslet’s newest role. She played Detective Mare Sheehan, who investigates the murder of a Pennsylvania teen while confronting a tragedy in her own life. It’s the biggest role she’s had in a few years. “Winslet described Mare of Easttown as a ‘cultural moment’ that ‘brought people together’ and ‘gave people something to talk about other than a global pandemic,’” according to The Hollywood Reporter. The show won 12 awards overall, but only three of them went to Kate, including an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
6 ‘Steve Jobs’ (2015) - 4 Wins And 30 Nominations
Until this year, Steve Jobs was the last huge role she had. She played Joanna Hoffman in the movie and received a ton of award nominations for her performance, including four that she won. According to Variety, “Even though it takes some time to find a consistent accent, Winslet soars as a marketing executive and confidant in Danny Boyle’s look at three significant moments in the Apple founder’s life."
5 ‘Sense And Sensibility’ (1995) - 5 Wins And 3 Nominations
Sense and Sensibility was Kate’s second role in a feature film. “Kate Winslet’s porcelain features coupled with her emotional inscrutability made her a perfect Marianne Dashwood in this Jane Austin adaptation from Ang Lee. Her being typecast into English period roles no doubt stemmed from this performance, where Winslet embodies her character’s romantic idealism and confusion with a winning touch,” according to IndieWire. Kate won five awards for her performance and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
4 ‘Titanic’ (1997) - 6 Wins And 11 Nominations
Titanic is the movie that launched Kate’s career and led to her becoming the famous actress she is today. It’s surprising that she didn’t win more awards for her memorable performance. “Helen Hunt won best actress at the Oscars in 1998 but Winslet, who was nominated for playing Rose, was the most enduring performance," according to The Sydney Morning Herald. No matter how many movies she does, she’ll always be remembered as the inspiring and independent Rose Dewitt Bukater.
3 ‘Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind’ (2004) - 10 Wins And 20 Nominations
Many of Kate Winslet’s fans say Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is her best performance (so far). Her performance in Titanic will always be a memorable one, but her ability to portray such a unique character in this film is something fans can’t forget. According to IndieWire, “Kate Winslet gives easily her most delightfully unhinged performance as ever as Clementine... Words can hardly do justice to how iconic this character is in pop culture, but Clementine has plenty of wise ones to fill in that gap, with Winslet bringing Kaufman’s script to melancholy life."
2 ‘Revolutionary Road’ (2008) - 13 Wins And 11 Nominations
In her second movie with longtime friend Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate won even more awards than the first time they worked together. No one can forget Jack and Rose, but their performances of Frank and April are over the top amazing. You can tell their acting skills have improved even more over the years since they have the ability to make their characters feel completely believable. According to Variety, “Raw, honest and brutal, her interpretation of a woman stuck in a loveless marriage (in her second pairing with Leonardo DiCaprio) was recognized by the Golden Globes."
1 ‘The Reader’ (2008) - 20 Wins And 10 Nominations
2008 was the year where Kate won tons of awards and was truly recognized for her talent. Both her performances in The Reader and Revolutionary Road were amazing, but she won a few more awards for The Reader and it was the only movie she’s won an Oscar for. “Winslet humanises an unlikeable and troubled woman for haunting effect,” according to The Sydney Morning Herald. Along with her first Oscar, she also won a Golden Globe and many other awards for her performance.
