What Mental Health Issues Did Landon Asher Barker Struggle With?

Back in August 2022, the young musician opened up to his Instagram fans about how he had been dealing with a mental health disorder, known as derealization. The feeling often makes the sufferer feel like they are in a dream. When Landon Asher Barker started experiencing a strong feeling of disassociation, he felt far removed, as though he was having an out-of-body experience. Speaking with People in October 2023, the youngster relayed the foreign feeling and how he poorly handled it at first. Landon told the news outlet that it all began with a bad drinking habit. He revealed:

"It originally started with a bad habit with alcohol. I was abusing and just abusing that substance, and one day it just shocked me, and I had one through that for months.''

The singer further revealed that it was an "awful" experience because he went through heightened OCD and ADHD. More of the mental imbalance he endured include heightened anxiety and disassociation. Landon Asher Barker described the feeling of detachment as "watching my whole entire life through a movie screen." The young adult further revealed that disassociation worsened his alcohol habit in 2022. He recalled how he would often drink to feel better after disassociating.

According to the Mayo Clinic, derealization known as depersonalization-derealization disorder occurs when an individual feels a persistent perception of observing themselves outside their bodies. Per studies in the United States, derealization affects about 2% of the populace and patients have been known to say they feel like robots.

The media personality eventually reduced his alcohol intake towards the end of 2022 after he suffered a concussion. Landon Asher Barker recalled, "When I got my concussion, I kind of just had to deal with it and I would just, I don't know, I just hated life for tree or four months."

Landon Asher Barker's Music Reflects His Mental Health Experience

While the pop-punk singer initially handled his mental health poorly by drowning in excessive alcohol, his music served as a better way to deal with it. Landon Asher Barker shared his struggle through his songs. Landon first shared his experience through music when he featured on Machine Gun Kelly's 2022 number one album, Mainstream Sellout.

The youngster featured alongside Macine Gun Kelly, Gunna and Young Thug in the song titled, Die In California. In his People interview, Landon Asher Barker revealed that the song had to do with "not liking the person you used to be." Landon stated further:

"But basically, it's like a mental health song, kind of going through it, but it just formed into what it is today, naturally and supernaturally."

Die in California was also the song that set Landon's music career in motion. For the longest time, the youngster tried to convince his father to sign him to his label, Elektra Imprint DTA Records. However, Travis Barker wanted Landon to prove himself. The singer said, "My dad would be like, 'Show me that you want to sign' I feel like I had to prove myself to get the opportunity to sign to them."

The opportunity to prove himself came when Landon worked on the song during a studio session. He noted that Machine Gun Kelly was walking by when he heard him recording for fun. Landon then proceeded to share a snippet on TikTok, and when Megan Fox heard it, she convinced Kelly to collaborate with Landon.

Machine Gun Kelly would later bring Landon Asher Barker on stage during his sold-out Madison Square Garden show to perform the hit track. The duo also collaborated on Landon's debut single Friends With Your Ex, which alludes to his love triangle with Charlie D'Amelio and his former friend, Case Hudson, professionally known as Lil Huddy. D'Amelio, who has a great rapport with Landon's dad, Travis Barker, is featured in the music video of the song.

Did Landon Asher Barker's Mental Health Improve?

When Travis Barker's son revealed his mental struggles on Instagram in 2022, he did so in hopes of reaching out to others who had similar experiences. Landon Asher Barker's post was on his Instagram story where he shared an up-close mirror selfie while writing, "It's been a Ruff view days for me my derealization has been really bad and I just wanna come on here I tell everyone your not alone and we are all imperfect in our own ways. I love you guys."

According to Landon, this act set him on a better path. He relayed that opening up made his struggles less difficult to handle. He explained that being able to reach out to the public about what he was going through helped him a great deal. Landon stated:

"I feel like if you hold it inside, it's a lot harder, and I feel like all the messages that I got when I posted about it honestly made me feel better. Looking to the public for support and more knowledge was honestly comforting for me and letting people know truly who I am... was actually kind of helpful for me."

Landon Asher Barker also revealed to the news outlet that he learned a great deal about mental health, how to deal with anxiety, OCD, ADHD and dissociation. The Downfalls High singer stated that he did a lot of research that helped him learn tips and tricks. Landon noted that he was scared of starting medication because of his history with addiction. However, therapy and workout sessions were the alternatives that helped him.
