While Lo Bosworth might not be as famous as her co-stars Lauren Conrad or Spencer Pratt, she has created a fascinating and cool post-MTV life for herself.
When Lo Bosworth appeared on Laguna Beach and the spin-off The Hills, she was known as LC's sweet friend who hung by the sidelines. It was shocking when, according to Us Weekly, she was interviewed on popular former RHONY star Bethenny Frankel's podcast Just Be and spilled secrets about her reality TV past.
In this article, we'll take a look at Lo Bosworth's comments that some parts of The Hills were fake when she once said the show was real. We'll also look at what else she shared about the TV series in the past.
Lo Bosworth Revealed The Hills Stars Were Told To Fight Years After Claiming The MTV Reality Series Was Real
When Lo Bosworth was interviewed on Bethenny Frankel's podcast Just Be on April 19th, 2024, Bosworth talked about producers putting the cast in "comprised situations." She said:
“Not by our own fault. We were very young women constantly put into compromised situations where we had to blood-sport it out against each other to get through a day of production."
However, in 2010, Lo Bosworth said The Hills was real, which is why her discussion with Frankel is so fascinating. After The Hills series finale aired and showed Justin Bobby standing on a TV set, fans wondered if that meant that MTV was explaining that the reality series was fake.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Bosworth wrote on her website:
"TWIST! Tuesday night, viewers said in disappointed shock, 'OMG was ‘The Hills’ really fake all this time?' I mean, that’s what you guys have been saying forever, right? Ha ha. Don’t worry. It wasn’t fake. I have never shot any ‘Hills’ scenes on a stage of any kind."
At the time, she maintained that The Hills was real but said "some relationships were pushed by producers." However, in 2024, she seemed to admit that producers wanted the cast members to fight so they could make better TV.

During her podcast interview with Lo Bosworth, Bethenny Frankel agreed that reality stars are forced into these situations. Frankel said, "It's kill or be killed and if you kill someone, you're doing your job, you're rewarded for bad behavior."
Bosworth explained that the stars didn't have "conflict" IRL but they were encouraged to have tension with each other when the cameras were rolling. While she once said that The Hills was real, she seemed to reveal the complete opposite during this interview.
Bosworth said, "Everyone now knows that if you were on reality TV, it's a very traumatic experience... There's a lot that the audience doesn't see or know about the experience." She added that The Hills producers created stories and that scenes were shot five or six times.
She explained:
"What we're experiencing actually is not what is being edited on the cutting room floor and then shared with the world... We had no idea in those early years that the executive producers were in a room with whiteboards mapping out the entire season..."
While she didn't address her past comments on the podcast, Bosworth didn't want to fight with her co-stars or be involved in manufactured drama. It seems that she did her best to maintain her sense of self. She said, “I served a very specific role, which I’m actually grateful for in hindsight. I didn’t have to get into it too much. But in the areas where I did, it still kind of haunts me to this day because there’s so many stories behind this story everybody saw on television that run very counter to what the public thinks of you.”
What Else Did Lo Bosworth Say About The Hills?
Lo Bosworth also isn't a fan of being on TV and told People in 2022, "I just wasn't that comfortable being in entertainment." She also said, "I made an agreement with MTV before I participated on Laguna Beach that I would do the show with guardrails."
The star added that she wasn't interested in arguing with anyone or creating the kind of engaging storylines that make for good reality TV. According to Buzzfeed, many people have shared the truth about starring on reality TV. While Bosworth isn't the only time to talk about her experiences, she has been particularly brave and honest, especially since she once said that The Hills wasn't fake.
She said:
"I never wanted to really be the one that was the focus of drama, fights dating, mainly because at the time I was just a teenager and uncomfortable with the idea of sharing those things on national television."
Bosworth said that she was "too shy and too embarrassed" and that she wasn't willing to jump into situations that were being filmed the way that the others did.
