Madonna is reportedly improving after being admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for a bacterial infection. However, whether the singer will ever tour again is still up in the air.
According to various outlets, Madonna was found unresponsive in New York, leading her team to call an ambulance to rush her to the hospital. She was admitted to the ICU and intubated overnight. Since then, it's been reported that Madonna has been released from the ICU but is still under medical observation.
As per Page Six, Madonna’s eldest child, daughter Lourdes, was by her side for the whole ordeal. The singer has six children in total. In addition to Lourdes, she’s a mother to Rocco Ritchie, 21, David Banda, 16, Mercy James, 15, and twins, Estere and Stella Ciccone, 8.
The singer’s long-time manager, Guy Oseary, confirmed her health scare via Madonna’s Instagram account on June 28.
“On Saturday, June 24, Madonna developed a serious bacterial infection which led to a several days stay in the ICU,” he wrote. “Her health is improving, however she is still under medical care. A full recovery is expected.”
Madonna Was Preparing To Tour When Found Unresponsive And Rushed To Hospital
For months, Madonna has been preparing for her nearly-sold-out world tour Celebration, which was set to launch in Vancouver on July 15. The tour’s theme is an ode to the 30th anniversary of her first single “Holiday.”
Following a variety of stops in North America, the tour was going to take Madonna to Europe, where it would conclude in Amsterdam on December 1.
However, in his statement, Madonna’s manager announced the tour has been postponed. He didn’t provide further details of when the shows would be rescheduled for.
“At this time we will need to pause all commitments, which includes the tour," he wrote. “We will share more details with you as soon as we have them, including a new start date for the tour and for rescheduled shows.”
Madonna Paused Her Tour, But Her Health May Be Too Fragile To Resume
The Celebration tour is Madonna’s 12th tour in her lifetime. But at 64-years old, there were concerns the singer wasn’t physically up for another world tour when she announced it. Given her recent health care, there are renewed concerns that she may never be able to tour again.
Speaking to Daily Mail, a source that’s allegedly related to Madonna said the singer’s family feared they were going to lose her amid her recent hospital stay, which speaks to how serious the infection was.
“For the past couple of days, no one really knew which direction this was going to turn, and her family was preparing for the worst,” they said. “That is why it was kept a secret since Saturday. Everyone believed that we may lose her and that has been the reality of the situation."
For now, Madonna’s team is likely seeing how her health improves before making any big decisions about the tour. But even if Madonna does hit the road again, at the very least, this could be her final tour.
