Mark Wahlberg Asked For A $900,000 Clause For Silver Linings Playbook In The Event Anne Hathaway Backed Out

Back in 2011, Silver Linings Playbook was a massive critical success, winning several awards. It was also a hit at the box office, bringing in $235 million off a $20 million budget. Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence were a major reason for the film's success. However, the cast almost looked completely different. Mark Wahlberg and Anne Hathaway were initially attached to the script. As it turns out, Wahlberg also had quite the clause in place to ensure his co-star wouldn't leave the project.

IMDb writes, "The main roles in the comedy-drama were first offered to Anne Hathaway and Mark Wahlberg, who were set to play Tiffany and Pat, respectively. But after Hathaway dropped out of the project, director David O. Russell cast Cooper instead of his good friend, Wahlberg, who reportedly wanted a special clause in the event that Hathaway backed out."

"I hit the jackpot with this movie, because David O. Russell and I from the get-go connected in a huge way. And it really felt like he made me his partner through the filming of the movie, and that led into the post-production," Cooper tells NPR.

It was a unique experience shooting the film for Cooper as well, especially given the type of genre he got involved with in the film.

"We never discussed the idea of whether it was going to be a comedic tone or a dramatic tone," says Cooper. "It was all about being a real tone. ... If you have two characters that have no filter and are going to have a discussion about the medicines that they take, chances are, comedy could, you know, be a byproduct. And that ... occurred when Tiffany Maxwell and Pat Solitano have that discussion around the dining room table about Klonopin and trazodone and all of the various drugs that they take."

It all worked out in the end, as Cooper was able to show his range as an actor, particularly in a dramatic role.
