Mayim Bialik Revealed That Her Anxiety Levels Increased After The Big Bang Theory
Mayim Bialik has been very open and honest about her bouts with anxiety. Bialik has shared her experiences through her podcast and various other interviews. Although Bialik faced some breakdowns during The Big Bang Theory, they also continued after the show. This was in large part due to the pandemic and all the stresses involved.
According to Bialik, her anxiety levels had increased dramatically because of it. "One of the things that I noticed during really in early COVID was that my anxiety, which is normally pretty high, got really, really high. And a lot of friends of mine who had previously not experienced mental health challenges were all of a sudden thinking, what is happening to me? Why can't I sleep? Why is eating so hard? And I said, welcome to the club. You're anxious."
Bialik would go on to reveal that the pressure of being a single parent also added to the stress, as her mind was constantly racing at the time.
As it turns out, the actress also faced lots of anxiety on The Big Bang Theory. There were certain scenes that would cause her anxiety and stress levels to spike, despite her talent as Amy for all those years on the sitcom.
Mayim Bialik Struggled With Improv Work And If A Scene Took Multiple Takes
Two things in particular caused Mayim Bialik massive anxiety spikes. During her conversation with Kevin Sussman, Bialik revealed that improv work was one of them, as the actress would typically freeze in the moment.
"With acting stuff, my level of anxiety surrounding performing is very, very high. It's a high level of anxiety. And when I've tried to do things like improv — things that are very, kind of, free form, I freeze. I literally freeze. It's like an instant knot in your throat ... it's stuck and there are tears there. Like, I want to cry."
Bialik also admits she grew very stressed when a certain scene or line wasn't to the liking of those behind the scenes on The Big Bang Theory. It would only make things that much more difficult for the actress, but nobody knew.
"I've had this a handful of times when working on Big Bang Theory when there was a certain way they wanted a line delivered, and I was like, 'Oh okay, I got that. I'll do that in the next take.' And I do it, but it's still not right. And sometimes it's like the audience isn't laughing, you know it's not funny."
She continues, "I can usually do about four takes or five takes before my throat starts to do that thing."
Bialik faced a lot of ups and downs during her time on the show. She faced major grief when the show was set to end after 12 seasons.
Mayim Bialik Felt A Sense Of Grief Over The Big Bang Theory Finale

"This is not a linear process, this grief thing, and the end of TBBT has reminded me how deep and insidious grief can be. I’ve not only been grieving the end of this phase of my career and life; I have been reminded of the loss of my father, my marriage, my ex boyfriend, my beloved cat, Esau."
"My brother-in-law, my youth, my grandparents. And so here we are. Entering the final few episodes of The Big Bang Theory. I don’t know what these scripts will hold. I don’t want to know. I’m just going to show up every day and see what our wonderful writers have in store for us," Bialik tells CinemaBlend.
In order to get past the grief, Bialik give it her best during the final Big Bang episodes. In addition, she combated the grief by looking forward and knowing that other special moments were on the horizon and were going to be created. Dwelling on the past wasn't the solution for Bialik.
