Interviews have a tendency of taking on awkward twists and turns, really depending on the celebrity. Take Barbra Streisand as an example, the star has strict rules about interviews, which even includes camera angles. If things aren't to her liking, she simply won't attend. That's what took place with Bill Maher, as it took Streisand 25 years to finally commit and appear on Real Time with Bill Maher.
In the following, we're going to take a closer look at Mel Gibson and some of his more troubling interviews. In fact, one of them took place most recently on FOX back in 2022. We'll reveal which question Gibson refused to answer, while also turning back the clock to the mid-90s, and taking a look at why Gibson walked out of the MTV Awards.
Looking back at the moment, it is believed that Gibson wasn't anticipating such an interview and spotlight. Although the fans enjoyed the candid moment, it seems as though Mel wasn't feeling the same way, and he decided to leave. We'll reveal what went into the decision, and why his own brother thinks Hollywood changed him, and not in a good way.
Mel Gibson's Interviews Can Go Off The Rails, And His Publicist Recently Stepped In To End A Conversation About Will Smith's Oscar Slap
Given his history with the media, Mel Gibson and his team are extra careful when it comes to sharing opinions. During his interview alongside Jesse Watters’ of Fox News back in 2022, the actor was asked about the Oscar slap, which was a hot topic at the time.
Watters asked, “You understand it probably better than a lot of people, with your career,” Watters asked Gibson. “And I was wondering if, you know, you had been the one that jumped up out of his seat and slapped Chris Rock, if you would have been treated the same way, Mel?”
Gibson clearly looked bothered by the question, and it didn't seem as though he was going to give an answer. Then of course, his team stepped in and ended the interview abruptly.
“Um, I’m — thank you, Jesse. Uh, we — that is our time,” the voice said.
Although some might deem this harsh, it wasn't comparable to what Gibson did at the MTV Awards. After he was displeased with the line of questioning, the actor fled from the awards altogether...
Mel Gibson Left The MTV Awards In The Mid-90s After He Deemed The Questions Asked, 'Inappropriate'
Reported by The Seattle Times way back in June of 1996, it seems like Mel Gibson was not flattered by his appearance at the MTV Awards. Gibson was not anticipating a certain interview with Janeane Garofalo, and he was further angered by the questioning that came his way.
The publication revealed, "Co-host Janeane Garofalo, who fired off such benign questions as "What do you think of my dress?" and "Do you think I'm America's sweetheart?" The studio audience seemed to love the exchange, but not so Gibson. He left the building."
MTV did issue a statement, calling the moment a mixup of sorts. "There was an unfortunate mixup," an MTV spokeswoman said. "We apologized for any discord that resulted. But, yes, he did leave."
In what should not come as a surprise, Gibson's team refused to comment further on the matter and what had taken place. Some called it an overreaction but given the way his career played out, it might've been best that the actor decided to leave before his mood worsened...
Mel Gibson Revealed Dealing With Fame Isn't Easy, While His Brother Claims Hollywood Changed Him
"You find out pretty quickly that ... this is out of your control," Gibson said discussing the impact of the paparazzi. The actor hasn't had the easiest time dealing with fame, and this was echoed by his own brother. According to Donal Gibson, Mel started to change once fame and fortune entered the mix.
“When he came to LA, I followed. He’s only two years older than me so he was my big brother, my best friend. When he became famous there was no jealousy. I was happy for him, proud that he’d made it," Donal reveals.
“Fame changed him. He started believing in his own publicity. The Mel I knew disappeared.‘Hollywood ate him up and spat him out. To me, the fame, the money, it all went to his head and created a monster. I hate what he has become.’”
At the age of 67, Gibson is still releasing content, with his latest work in Confidential Informant in 2023, along with On the Line in 2022 and Father Stu. The actor also has a plethora of upcoming roles, continuing on in Hollywood despite all the controversy he faced in the past.
