Actress Cynthia Nixon, famous for playing the role of Miranda Hobbes on Sex and the City, agreed to star in the revival series And Just Like That… on one condition: that they substantially change the story, so it wasn’t just the same show 15 years later.

It’s safe to say that Nixon got her wish. The revival series was different from the original in a myriad of ways, with fans hating some aspects of the show and praising others. Most notably, the absence of Kim Cattrall’s character, Samantha Jones, upset loyal fans. As did the way Miranda’s relationship with Steve panned out in the new series.

The majority of fans weren’t happy with the turn taken by Miranda’s love life, criticizing her new love interest. But there’s another character on the show who was almost going to be her love interest instead. Read on to find out who!

Miranda’s Controversial Storyline In ‘And Just Like That…’

Fans who haven’t been living under a rock would have heard all about Miranda’s controversial storyline in the Sex and the City reboot, And Just Like That …

In the revival series, Miranda is in an unhappy marriage to Steve, whom she was madly in love with in the original series. She has also given up her job as a corporate lawyer to return to college and get a Master’s of Human Rights degree. And her unhappiness has led to a drinking problem.

As the series continues, Miranda begins an affair with someone outside her marriage and eventually leaves Steve for that person. She also gives up the internship she earns to follow her new love interest to Los Angeles.

Who Is Miranda’s Love Interest In 'And Just Like That'?

Perhaps the most controversial part of Miranda’s storyline — and one that fans seem to have the biggest problem with — is Miranda’s new love interest: Che Diaz, who some fans have called the worst TV character in a decade.

Played by Sara Ramirez, Che is Carrie’s boss and runs a podcast. They are also a comedian and activist, often speaking on the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community. Che identifies as a bisexual non-binary person and their pronouns are they/them.

The majority of fans — at least, the ones who have been vocal on social media — aren’t happy with Miranda’s transition in the new series. Many of them have condemned her for leaving Steve and also prioritizing her career interests after her relationship with Che.

Some fans have also responded negatively to Miranda’s white hair, which she changes back to her signature red at the end of the season.

Which Love Interest Did Miranda Almost Have?

Interestingly, Miranda was going to have another love interest on the show rather than Che.

In the And Just Like That… documentary, Cynthia Nixon, who plays Miranda, revealed that it was Miranda’s college professor Nya Wallace, portrayed by Karen Pittman, who was going to be her love interest.

Ultimately, they settled on Che over Nya because Nya was a straight character, so the dynamic would have been different. The relationship would have involved two straight women exploring their sexualities at the same time. But with Che, Miranda embarks on a new romance with someone who is already confident with their own sexuality and preferences.

Who Does Nya Wallace End Up With?

Despite not being Miranda’s love interest, Nya Wallace plays a prominent secondary character in the series. She is Miranda’s professor and also deals with her own issues with her husband Andre as they struggle with infertility. While her husband is adamant that he wants a baby, Nya begins to question whether motherhood is something she really wants.

Not being written into a relationship with Miranda, Nya stays with her husband.

Who Fans Believed Carrie Would End Up With

As the series aired, fans were making their own predictions about what would happen. While some guessed that Miranda would end up with Che from the first episode, others made a few other assumptions that weren’t realized — at least, not in the first season.

After Miranda left Steve, fans wondered whether Carrie would end up with him instead. They guessed that this would be a surprising dynamic that would give both Carrie and Steve, who lose their partners in the series, a happy ending.

However, while Carrie and Steve share a couple of sweet moments together as friends, while Carrie consoles him about Miranda, there are no romantic sparks between them. Instead, Carrie dates the recently widowed Peter, but in the end, decides not to see him.

In the final episode, Carrie is seen locking lips with her podcast producer Franklyn, played by Ian Hernandez, in the elevator. Since the episode aired, fans have speculated that, if there’s a second season, Carrie will explore a romance with Franklyn, as she seemed to enjoy the kiss.
