By the time Sex and the City wrapped in 2004, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall) were the obvious fan favorites. Over a decade later, Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) gained a new cult following. Thanks to the Instagram page, Every Outfit on Sex & the City (@everyoutfitonsatc). Its founders Chelsea Fairless and Lauren Garroni realized they "had grown into Mirandas" as their account grew popular, leading to a "We Should All Be Mirandas" T-shirt merch. It was inspired by Dior's $800 "We Should All be Feminists" shirt.

Eventually, they published a book called We Should All Be Mirandas: Life Lessons from Sex and the City's Most Underrated Character. "At the end of the day, [Miranda Hobbes] went to Harvard, became a law partner before the age of 35, owns her own brownstone, has a full-time housekeeper, and in today’s world, that’s aspirational," Garroni said of their love for the underrated character. No wonder fans were excited to see Miranda rocking her 50s in the HBO Max reboot, And Just Like That. But two episodes in, fans are now accusing the sequel of "destroying" the group's remaining girl boss like it did Peloton's reputation. Here's why.

Miranda Hobbes Is 'Totally Out of Character' In 'And Just Like That'

One fan couldn't help but express their strong feelings about Miranda Hobbes' "totally out of character" evolution. "It’s good character evolution that Miranda is going back to school to get a graduate degree in human rights. What’s totally out of character is that in the 10 years since the last movie she’s she somehow has lost all the poise, confidence and sensitivity she had." they wrote in a Reddit post titled "They've destroyed Miranda." And by poise, it's not about Miranda's grey hair which Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) criticized in the first few minutes of episode 1.

"While she might have been insecure in her love life, Miranda (and Samantha) always seemed like the grownups in the group. Miranda was completely confident about her work," added the Redditor. "And to see Miranda acting like she’d never seen a black woman with braids before was just a giant cringe fest. Putting aside the fact that Miranda’s lived her adult life in NYC and has seen a million POC, Miranda has been written in the past to be culturally sensitive." They make a good point. Miranda would always call out Samantha for making politically incorrect statements. The disappointed fan also cited that "in the second SATC movie, Miranda was the woman who read up on all the Middle East customs and demanded the girls respect the culture."

Miranda Hobbes Should Be Into Podcasts

In And Just Like That, Miranda repeatedly brands herself as "old school." She refuses to listen to podcasts, prefers hardbound books over a Kindle, and gets all worked up over legal marijuana. "WTF was that about Miranda not wanting to listen to podcasts?" the Redditor protested. "For one, she was written as an early adopter of things (her palm pilot) and she runs her life efficiently and she would have been the FIRST person to listen to podcasts, because she can multi-task while listening! Listen to podcasts while on the subway, etc." Or while in the Uber Black she deserves.

The fan also found it weird that Miranda went off on her son for smoking weed but allow him to have loud intercourse in their home. "Let’s talk about the incongruity of Miranda allowing Brady to have noisy sex with his girlfriend at their home, while everyone is awake, but freaking out about some weed (which I believe is now legal in NY state)? Ugh I’m just so pissed about what they’ve done to her," the fan said in conclusion. It sure seems like they turned her into "that boomer."

But Miranda Hobbes' Alcoholism Makes Sense

The sequel isn't so subtle with the hints that Miranda may become an alcoholic at 55. She willingly waits for a bar to open so she can have a drink before her first class, she brings out a purse wine during Lily Goldenblatt's (Cathy Ang) piano recital, and was in a rush trying to get her alcohol fix during Mr. Big's funeral. But this is probably the only "ruinous" detail about the new Miranda which fans can forgive. "The alcoholism makes SO MUCH sense to me," a commenter wrote.

"She’s a woman who has always been in control of everything," they added. "Alcohol let’s her essentially lose control and not have to be completely on top of it all. It’s the only way she can get herself to the point of letting go." Fair point. It's an interesting twist, as well as a relevant issue to address — seeing such a strong woman also struggle with anxiety and hopefully bounce back with grace as the season goes.
