The Love is Blind theory is that if two people can make an emotional connection without seeing each other, then that must prove that love is blind. It’s similar to blind dating, but allows the contestants the opportunity to talk through a wall for about two weeks, getting to know each other.
The strangest part of the experiment is that the contestants are building a connection so deep in a short amount of time and proposing before meeting their fiancé in person. People normally date for years before taking this step, learning each other's quirks and personalities only after letting their guards down. As they get engaged to someone they barely know or propose to their second choice, it makes for some awkward on-screen moments.

8 Abhishek ‘Shake’ Chatterjee's Shallow Meet & Greet
Shake was one of the shallower characters on the show, as in the first episode, he didn’t make the best impression on many of the girls. In his first meet and greet, he put an emphasis on physical appearance.
He asked Iyanna about her size, saying, “I love buying clothes for girls,” and told Hope, “I get along best with individuals that do work out.” The girls in the pods look uncomfortable as he continued, “I prefer to date younger,” and telling Deepti, “my serious relationships, they’ve all been blonde.”
7 The Conceited and Insecure Trisha Frame
Trisha Frame did not grab the attention of any guy in the pods as she made herself out to be incredibly vain. Her exaggeration of how many friends and followers she has on Instagram came off as insecure, shallow, and awkward.
The guys seemed uncomfortable as she said, “I have like a lot of friends, it’s crazy.” Later, she talked about Danielle to the producers, saying, “she's not much of a competition compared to me.” When Nick greets her in the booth, she asked, “why are all you guys so excited to talk to me?” She addressed how conceited she sounded, prompting Nick to laugh awkwardly and tell the producers, “holy sh*t.”
6 Natalie Lee & Shayne Jansen Learn Opposites Don’t Always Attract
Some of the more awkward interactions are between Shayne and Natalie as they pretend to understand each other. It’s obvious from Shayne’s personality in the beginning that he's fun, playful, and outgoing.
After they’re engaged, Natalie seems to jokingly put him down and make him feel bad. During beach volleyball, she admits he sucks the energy from her, and he calls her out about their relationship, asking, “why can’t you brag about it?” She responds, “I show my love differently. You have such high expectations. I’m not about PDA. I’m not always going to be super affectionate with you.” They clearly have different love languages.
5 Danielle Is For Drama
Danielle and Nick’s relationship seemed genuine, but her insecurity and trust issues quickly overshadowed Nick’s maturity. He remained eager to make their engagement last even as she continued to blame, manipulate, and fight with him. She constantly put herself down and appeared to crave drama as much as she created it.
It’s awkward to watch Danielle argue with Nick for her own self-assurance. Danielle proved to be the self-centered antagonist of the relationship when she said, “I sat in the closet and cried” for three hours. Their fights continued throughout the season, and she clearly needed to focus on her personality flaws rather than sabotaging her relationship.
4 Did Mallory Zapata Pick The Wrong Guy?
Mallory was put in the middle of a love triangle with Jarrette and Salvador. Jarette proposed to her, but she declined as her feelings for Salvador were stronger. However, their relationship wasn't what she had expected.
It’s a rather awkward interaction between Mallory and Jarrette in the "Meet the Other Couples" episode, after they’re both engaged to other people. Their chemistry is immediate as she calls him “JareBear” and admitted she’s not ready to marry Sal, saying, “I’m such a guy’s girl.” They both ended up in tough situations and possibly with the wrong people. It was so obvious to the other contestants at the time that Salvador was in tears by the end of the night.
3 Shaina Hurley’s Lies
Shaina’s ego took a big hit when Shayne chose Natalie over her. She either tried to prove her worth to herself or induce jealousy in Shayne. However, it backfired. She ended up engaged to someone she didn’t even like, let alone love.
Shaina had many awkward moments with Kyle, telling him her religion was a huge part of her life and wanting a “man who’s going to spiritually lead me.” She then turned to the producers, saying she still had feelings for Shayne. She refused to spend the first night with her new fiancé and left the hotel, which was the first red flag. Many of their interactions afterward are hard to swallow. Kyle says, “you never should have said yes to me,” and Shaina responded, “you’re one-hundred percent right.”
2 Shaina Hurley, The Villain
Shaina’s jealousy and feelings for Shayne are clear by the end of the season after she confronted him on the beach. She made herself look bad after putting down his relationship with Natalie and going on a rant to defend herself.
She comes off like the conceited high school mean girl asking, “I don’t know if you're bored in your relationship, you have to throw me in there?” It’s very awkward between them as they go from flirting to fighting in two seconds flat. Out of spite, she said, “I feel like I’m being portrayed as some kind of villain... in your fake-ass relationship.” Shayne was immediately offended, and Shaina put the nail in the coffin of their potential friendship.
1 Abhishek ‘Shake’ Chatterjee Said He Was Engaged To His Aunt?
Last but not least, the most awkward part of the whole season is between Shake and Deepti. He treated her terribly behind her back with sly remarks, comments, and uncomfortable facial expressions.
In the pool, he looked ready to jump ship as she expressed her happiness and attraction towards him. In episode four, he tells Jarette, “I’m not physically attracted to her. It feels like I’m with my aunt.” He's either having major commitment phobia or genuinely knows he shouldn't have to force sexual chemistry, either way, that's a big red flag.
