TLC recently debuted a new reality television show titled My Pregnant Husband. The show explores the lives of trans-men and their partners after they become pregnant.
The premiere episode is divided between two couples. The TLC YouTube channel posted a clip from the premiere episode, featuring Myles and Precious.
Myles Is a Pregnant Man
Myles and Precious refer to themselves as a trans-family. In the clip, they discuss the traditional gender roles in regards to having children.
Precious says: "In some sense, it upsets me that I can't physically carry a child, but my husband can. I think my husband is handsome in this state. He's glowing..." Myles was quick to add, "It's a very masculine glow though."
Myles asked Precious when they would have the conversation with their baby about the two of them being trans. Precious responded, "From the time that she's born, we're going to expose her to diversity and let her know that families come in all different shapes and sizes. So by the time that she can understand that her parents are trans, it's something that she can be proud of."
The two also discussed the role reversals they face especially in regards to Myles' cravings for soul food.
Myles' Young Life
In the clip, Myles addressed the story of when he came out saying, "I knew very early on that I was different. I was my parents' beautiful little girl, but I had an older brother and I felt like I was just like him, but I knew that my body looked a lot different from his body and I didn't understand that."
Myles' parents supported him through his transition. He continued, "I actually came out in 1986 when I was five years old, and I didn't even come out as trans because that wasn't even a part of me or my family's vocabulary. I just told my parents I felt more comfortable dressing masculine and even being referred to in masculine pronouns. Instantly, they started reading books on what was going on with this. They just loved and nurtured me through the whole thing."
My Pregnant Husband premiered on July 23. The full first episode can be seen on TLC's website with a cable subscription. New episodes air Thursdays at 10 p.m., 9 p.m. central.
