The movie sees the Pitch Perfect star as a medical researcher aboard a spaceship headed to Mars commanded by Marina Barnett, played by Toni Collette. The cast also includes the titular stowaway Michael, played by Shamier Anderson, and biologist Kim, portrayed by Daniel Das Kim.
According to the increasingly tense trailer, the crew will have to make the hardest decision of all, as they’re all struggling for survival.
‘Stowaway’ Sees Anna Kendrick Going Against Her Own Crew
The movie is directed and co-written by musician and filmmaker Joe Penna. Stowaway is his sophomore feature, following survival drama Arctic starring Mads Mikkelsen.
On Stowaway, Kendrick’s character Zoe Levenson is the only one rejecting the suggestion that one of the crew won’t survive due to dwindling supplies.
“It was so simple and so lean, but totally compelling," Kendrick told EW about first reading Penna and Ryan Morrison’s script.
The Love Life protagonist also explained how she felt that the script could be poignant at a challenging time such as this, when the world is spending more time at home in isolation, trying to make sense of things.
“The thing that feels really relevant is less the isolation of it and more that kind of problem-solving part of your brain that we were all engaging so vigorously in the first couple months of the pandemic," Kendrick said.
"Just that constant problem-solving of, 'wait, okay, how do we fix this?' And just when it seems like you're onto something, there's some very obvious fundamental problem," she added.
Anna Kendrick Apologizes For Her Cup Song Rendition
Kendrick recently apologized for being responsible for several camp counselors’ trauma with her rendition of the so-called cup song.
In the first Pitch Perfect movie, released in 2012, Kendrick’s character Beca joins her college’s a cappella group after crushing the audition. What does she play to win the hearts and ears of the Barden Bellas? A rendition of Cups (When I’m Gone) played on empty cups.
The folk tune played on cups as percussion first went viral in 2011 when Reddit user Anna Burden covered a version of it by British band Lulu and the Lampshades. But the song’s popularity skyrocketed following the Pitch Perfect release and a music video where Kendrick as Beca plays the song.
“I was a camp counselor the year Pitch Perfect came out and I can’t tell you how bad it was. We had to ban empty cups,” former camp counselor Ellory Smith wrote in a since-deleted tweet.
Kendrick retweeted Smith and apologized.
"I am so, so sorry," Kendrick wrote.
Stowaway will become available to stream on April 22
