How Did Mariah Carey And Nick Cannon Meet?
Mariah Carey first met Nick Cannon at the 2005 Teen Choice Awards where he presented her with the Choice Music R&B Artist award in the form of a big surf board. However, their first official encounter was a brief and light-hearted exchange backstage before the award was presented.
Nick Cannon was quoted in a clip of TV One's Uncensored opening up about how he flirted with her when she approached him. "She had heard me speaking all of these positive, secret little nothings about her in interviews, and I remember seeing her backstage … and she stops right in front of me, and she's like, 'I heard all those nice things you been saying about me.' I was like, 'They're true! Just give me an opportunity to make them come true!' And she smiled, and they floated her off."
Three years later, in 2008, Carey hires Cannon to star in the music video for her song "Bye Bye" as her love interest. Initially, they denied dating rumors, but the chemistry was undeniable in front of the camera. Shortly after, that same year, the couple revealed that they had married in a private ceremony in The Bahamas. Fans were shocked but also excited and happy for the couple.
What Caused Carey And Cannon To Break Up?
In 2014, Carey and Cannon separate for good. They share between them twin children, Monroe and Moroccan, born in early 2011. A source close to the couple opened up to People Magazine, stating that they had been living apart for months before rumors of their inevitable divorce had even begun.
The source explained that Carey was staying in the New York City apartment that she shared with Cannon while he was spending his nights in hotel rooms. But what was the cause for their tension? The source was quoted saying, "When things don't go well career-wise, sometimes you turn on your other half... there is a lot to fight over. It could get contentious." The cryptic insight foreshadowed their separation not one month later.
Details About The Divorce Settlement And The Ferrari
In late December 2016, there was an infamous incident where Mariah Carey left her fans waiting in the cold rain for 3 hours during the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree taping while she was on the phone with her lawyers about the divorce settlements.
It got so heated between Carey and Cannon that they even fought over who would get their children after the divorce. The phone call lasted a whopping 5 hours.
After the smoke cleared, they were eventually able to settle on a laundry list of agreements; one of the more bizarre agreements being that their children Monroe and Moroccan are not allowed to address anyone that either parent might marry in the future as "mom" or "dad."
Further details in the settlement showed that both parties declared income in 2014, with Cannon making $2 million and Carey making $6.5 million. This caused the presiding judge to instruct Carey to pay Cannon $2.7 million Cannon was also instructed to start putting money in a trust for the twins every month for the amount of $5,000. To top everything else off, Carey signed away her ownership to their 2012 Ferrari.
As of this writing, Mariah Carey is the primary caregiver to their twins and if Cannon ever decides to pay them a visit, Carey was also instructed to pay for his travel and lodgings. Since their divorce, Carey was engaged to billionaire James Packer, but after the engagement got called off, she demanded $50 million be paid to her.
As for Cannon, he's been busy in his own sense. He just recently announced on Twitter that he's expecting his tenth child with model Brittney Bell, with whom he already shares two children. However, Carey and Cannon have remained amicable and continue to be a model of what great co-parenting should look like.
