Summary

  • Nicki Minaj boldly refuses to sing her popular song "Starships" at a concert, much to the disappointment of fans.
  • She openly despises "Starships," along with other hit songs like "Anaconda" and "Your Love," regretting ever releasing them.
  • It's unclear what criteria Nicki Minaj uses to determine which songs she likes or dislikes, leaving fans wondering about future opinions on her music.

One thing about Nicki Minaj is that she isn't afraid to speak her mind. This trait can be either off-putting or beloved, depending on if you consider yourself to be a part of Minaj's notorious army of Barbs or not. Would Nicki Minaj be Nicki Minaj if she didn't boldly and unashamedly speak her mind, even if it's directed at her fans?

Being a female rap veteran in the music industry, Nicki Minaj has created a catalog that has withstood the test of time. This is evidenced in the numerous hit records that never seem to escape radios around the world.

This can be a blessing and a curse for artists. A blessing in the fact that their work paid off and is profitable; a curse because, if a song holds certain memories or just isn't an artist's favorite, they're forever haunted by its success. This happened to be the case for one of Nicki Minaj's most popular songs, which she bluntly refused to sing at a concert when fans demanded it.

Nicki Minaj Refused To Sing 'Starships' At Her Concert

"Let's go to the beach-each / Let's go get a wave" is the opening lyric to one of Nicki Minaj's most memorable, catchy, and popular songs: "Starships."

It appeared on her sophomore studio album,"Pink Friday... Roman Reloaded." Since "Starships" is a signature Nicki Minaj song, it shocked fans when she refused to perform it at a concert.

Here's how the whole ordeal went down: Nicki Minaj was in the middle of her set at a New Year's Eve celebration at E11EVEN in Miami, Florida. The first beats and instrumentals of "Starships" began to play and everything seemed to be going well until the song reached the second verse. At this time, Minaj abruptly stopped and said, "Hold on. Psych, psych psych," to a booing crowd.

The short video clip was filled to the brim with disbelief and boos from the crowd as a shocked face Minaj shrugged her shoulders. She then called the song stupid before switching to the next song.

Why Doesn't Nicki Minaj Like Her Song 'Starships'?

After Nicki Minaj refused to indulge in a crowd-favorite song, fans were left wondering why.

Along with calling her 2011 hit song stupid on stage, Nicki Minaj revealed that she regretted ever writing and releasing the song. In a 2020 interview with Pollstar Live (roughly three years before being boo'd on stage), Nicki Minaj revealed that she despised 'Starships.'

"I hate 'Starships,' I mean ew, 'Starships?' I'm like 'Why did I do that?' I really think that that every time I hear it."

This public display of disdain for "Starships" definitely taints the experience for fans now, since they now know that it isn't favorable to the artist singing it.

What's more is that "Starships" isn't the only song the Queen of Rap regrets putting out.

Nicki Minaj Dislikes Many Of Her Hit Songs Beloved By Fans

Unfortunately for fans, "Starships" isn't the only song Nicki Minaj hated putting on her discography.

The other songs that are on the list are "Anaconda," which appeared on Minaj's "The Pinkprint" album, and "Your Love," which appeared on Minaj's debut album, "Pink Friday." (insert gasp). Yes, two of Nicki Minaj's arguably most worshiped songs are deep-seated regrets for the Queen of Rap.

Nicki Minaj didn't give straightforward explanations when she exposed her dislike for "Your Love" and "Anaconda" in an interview with People.

"I wish I never recorded 'Anaconda.' I like the video, but ugh. My first ever solo song on Billboard was 'Your Love.' To this day I like the video, but I hate the song."

She then went on to say that she could go on and on if given the chance, leaving many fans wondering what other songs of hers she could possibly hate.
