When world-famous actress Nicole Kidman met country music star Keith Urban in 2005, it was love, but she didn't quite know it. The Batman Forever star wasn't necessarily looking for love when she arrived at the G'Day LA event, but it sure found her. A few months after first meeting Urban, he plucked up the courage to ask her on a date, and it wasn't long after that he popped the question. In June 2006, just over a year later, the pair tied the knot in an intimate ceremony in Sydney, Australia. Of their relationship, Kidman famously said: "We didn't really know each other – we got to know each other during our marriage."

6 Nicole Kidman Wasn't Immediately Head Over Heels For Keith Urban

Though their love grew strong, Nicole wasn't immediately in love with her husband. Their bond grew slowly.

"It wasn't like the earth shook' when they met, she said.

Nevertheless, things developed between them. 'Two Aussies born in the same year, but living in different worlds and cities, how did that happen? It was meant to be,' she said.

5 But Keith Urban Was Head Over Heels For Nicole Kidman

Though he didn't let on, Keith was immediately smitten with Nicole. In 2013, when appearing on Ellen DeGeneres, Kidman explained a conversation she later had with her husband of 16 years: "I'm like, 'You didn't love me at first sight, you didn't notice me,' and he's like, 'Yes I did, but I just didn't let on'," she laughed.

She continued, "But we kind of met and then about four months later he called me."

Keith made his proposal special. On the morning of her 38th birthday, Keith appeared at her home at dawn to make his offer.

"He sat on the stoop of my New York apartment, I came out - it was 5am in the morning and it was my birthday - and he had flowers," Nicole recalled.

3 Keith Urban And Nicole Kidman Bonded Through Both Being 'Lonely People'

It was clear that the pair had a great deal in common, but what really made them well-matched was their affinity for company: both were lonely souls.

'I think we were two lonely people,' Nicole told Vanity Fair. 'I would probably say that two very lonely people managed to meet at a time when they could open themselves to each other.'

Keith told People a different perspective, theorizing that some outside force drew them together: 'I feel there was something else at work… bringing us together and then just continuing to watch over us.'

2 Nicole Kidman And Keith Urban Have Enjoyed Spending Time Together Through The Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has only enhanced their feelings for each other.

"Staying home, doing school from home and all of those things that everyone has been doing is a completely different life for us," Nicole explained.

In an interview with The Times, Urban described their home life set up. "We live in different places – between Nashville and London – so we're just used to not having a particular structure. It's based on whether Nic's working, whether I'm working," he said.

"I love being in the kitchen in the morning so that when my kids come down, there's noise and there's joy in the home. That's really important to me," Nicole said. "We never leave the kids, one of us is always there. When Keith went to Nashville and I had to work late nights, I rang his mother and asked her to move in with the girls and she did, and brought along her kids.

"That's special. It's the nature of what we're all having to do now – you get to be commune-like; this extended family where you're all raising each other's kids together. We've all had to go back to basics, and this year has required it because people are pleading for help."

1 Nicole Kidman Has Expressed Regret That She Didn't Meet Keith Urban Sooner

Nicole often wishes that she had met her current husband sooner. The actress had previously been wed to fellow actor Tom Cruise, with their marriage lasted between 1990 and 2001. Not meeting Keith until her late 30s meant they were more limited in growing their family - something Nicole dwells upon.

"I wish I could have met him much earlier and had way more children with him, but I didn't.

"I mean, if I could have had two more children with him that would have been just glorious," Nicole told Vogue in 2017.
