It is hard to believe that Heaton almost didn't make it onto the show because of her looks. We'll conclude by taking a look back at the origins of the show, and how Heaton almost lost out on the role.
Let's take a closer look.
Patricia Heaton Got A Big Reaction From The Audience After Her Character Debra Showed Up To A Meeting In A Revealing Outfit
She appeared on Everybody Loves Raymond for almost a decade. Fans got to see Debra Barone in 210 episodes. The actress didn't fail to entertain audiences and that held true during a particular episode. Once again, from a storyline standpoint, it was because of a comment made by Raymond that Debra decided to dress provocatively for a meeting. However, little did Debra know, Raymond was completely lying.
Nonetheless, it made for a great moment as Heaton's character walks down the stairs in a revealing outfit, and gets a huge reaction from the audience.
Credit to Brad Garrett who was also part of the scene. His comedic timing just made things that much better. Debra tells Raymond's mother, "I like the way that I dress, and by the way, so does your son." Robert answers, "That's right." Which also received a great reaction from the audience. The entire scene is definitely worth a look back at.
Fans got to see a different side of Patricia Heaton during what was a very memorable scene in the show's history. It once again demonstrated the importance of Heaton on the show, and how she can turn things up in a different direction when needed.
Fans Had A Blast With The Scene And Had A Lot Of Praise For Both Patricia Heaton And Brad Garrett
Looking back at some of the classic moments on the show, Heaton's reaction certainly made it memorable, and the same held true for the others during the scenes. Fans on YouTube chimed in, paying homage to the scene.
Fans wrote, "This is my one of my favorite ELR episodes! Patricia Heaton always looks gorgeous but in this episode she is down right hot!"
"Robert is hilarious. He remembers what Debra wore to a t but he don't remember what his own wife wore. Lol."
"Ahhh the 1990s, a time where Debra's top would be considered inappropriate. Today, that's considered church attire, sometimes it's even used for baptisms."
"She was almost 50 years old here and was sooo pretty.I see why my husband had such a crush on her as a kid lol."
Fans clearly had a lot of praise for Heaton's appearance during the episode. Surprisingly, she almost didn't make it on the show for the opposite reason.
Patricia Heaton Almost Lost The Role On Everybody Loves Raymond Due To CBS Wanting Someone "Hotter"
That's right, CBS allegedly wanted a "hotter" actress to play on Everybody Loves Raymond. Creator Phil Rosenthal made the reveal. He stated that CBS was looking elsewhere, and it almost caused him to quit the show.
"I almost quit the show over it." When another actress was presented, Rosenthal was adamant that wasn't the way to go.
"I thought she was wrong, but I met with her and she was a very pleasant, very nice person. She wasn't going to read for the role but during the meeting, I convinced her to read a little bit with me," he said. "And she was 10 times worse for the part than I thought she would be!"
Ultimately, Rosenthal was able to steer CBS in a different direction.
"I said, 'I love her and I've loved everything she's been in. I think she's terrific and beautiful, but then she read for me and I have to tell you it's just not what I wrote. I just don't see them as a couple. I think she could do it, but I also think that maybe we could do better,'" he recalled.
"[Les] said, 'Well, it's just an idea.' In other words, he let me slide and we agreed to keep looking! Two weeks later, Patty walked in and within five minutes she had the part. When it's right, it's right, and you know it immediately," he added.
CBS declined to comment on the story, but it clearly was the right move.
