Ever since the earliest days of television, there have been talk shows in some form. Not all talk shows are created equal though. Some have proven themselves to be hugely successful, such as NBC's The Tonight Show which debuted in 1954 and continues to this day, making it the world's longest-running talk show. Others are just utterly dreadful and it's surprising they make it past the first season... and if they do, we keep our fingers crossed hoping they gets axed for good.

There are several aspects that can make or break a show, but it's fair to say that without a great host who manages to make the guests feel comfortable and makes the audience laugh, it will be hard to turn the show into a success. Another factor is, of course, the quality of guests the show has access to. Let's compare a few great and not-so-great shows.
