Speaking of controversy, we're going to take a look back at Fallon's interview alongside Roseanne Barr. As per usual, Barr wasn't afraid to speak her mind, and that held true for her relationship with Donald Trump. We'll reveal what she had to say, and why NBC censored a part of her interview.
Donald Trump And Roseanne Barr Have A Mutual Respect For One Another
Roseanne Barr did not shy away from her very public support for Donald Trump. Roseanne spoke highly of the former President during his run in office, and got a call from Trump when her return to TV became a major hit.
She revealed with ABC News, "I've known him for many years and he's done a lot of nice things for me over the years, and so it was just a friendly conversation about working and television and ratings."
As expected, the tweet and comments weren't met with complete support by the fans. Nonetheless, Trump also offered public praise for Roseanne as well.
“Look at Roseanne—I called her yesterday—look at her ratings, look at her ratings!” said Trump at the time of the show's release. “It was about us [the supporters and the president himself]."
Although the show got off to a great start for Barr, it would all take a terrible turn, in large part, thanks to a tweet.
Roseanne Barr Dropped An F-Bomb Discussing Her Support For Donald Trump
On the heels of Roseanne's successful return to TV, Barr appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Throughout the interview, Barr was very open and honest about all matters, and that included her thoughts on Donald Trump. Fallon brought up the topic. He asked, "With a big hit, come people that aren't so happy, as well," Fallon said, "if you say that you're a supporter of Donald Trump."
Roseanne was unapologetic for her support, and got censored by NBC for her comments. She said, “Oh, yeah, people are mad about that," Barr agreed. "But, you know, I don’t give a f***." Of course, that last word didn't make it on to television.
Barr continues, "Everybody had to choose for themselves, according to their own conscience, who they thought was the lesser of two evils," she said. "Everybody chose that, so I'm not gonna put anybody down who didn't vote like me."
"This is America. It’s a free country, and when you weigh it all together, I just felt like we needed a whole new thing. All the way — bottom to top," USA Today quotes Roseanne during her interview with Jimmy Fallon.
The interview moment can be seen below on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon YouTube channel at the 1:10 mark.
It was quite the moment for Roseanne and despite the massive rating of over 20 million viewers for her show, it all came crashing down the same year because of a tweet.
Roseanne Barr's Big Return Came To An End After A Controversial Tweet
Roseanne was playing the blame game following her firing from the sitcom. According to Barr, an advisor for the Obamas played a role in her dismissal. She said with USA Today, ‘This tweet is unforgivable.’ That’s what I was told and I tend to believe it because the woman who fired me is now working with the Obamas at Netflix."
However, Barr did regret the tweet and believes she should have never said it. "Of course, I’ve apologized because this was an insensitive comment, but really its damage was in the way it was perceived. I can’t be responsible for the way people perceive things. People have always done this to me. They don’t get me."
“I don’t just like to make people laugh. I like to (tick) them off and make them think too. I’m a provocateur… It’s like the PC police. It’s about mind control. Everyone in America is under mind control from television except for my show – that’s why they got rid of it.”
Roseanne would also go on to reveal to being threatened by ABC. She stated that the network said if anything controversial took place again, her reruns would be removed by the network forever, and this would result in a massive profit loss for backend money.
