It's good to be the Queen. You live in multiple palaces, meet the biggest celebrities and heads of state at the world's most expensive parties, and best of all you can eat some of the finest, or trashiest, foods as you please. Yes, sometimes the royals eat trashy. While the queen rarely touches anything like pizza or fast food, Prince Harry and William have been spotted by paparazzi at McDonald's quite a few times. The boys used to eat there with their mother, Princess Diana, all the time.
True, there are certain expectations when it comes to table manners and conduct when eating at Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle, but the royals get to set the menu up and have any kind of dining experience they want. They also have some seemingly bizarre rules that would complicate the work of any other chef. With all the money and power that Queen Elizabeth II and her family have, it makes for some pretty interesting eating habits.
8 The Queen Likes Hamburgers But Does Them Fancy
While she doesn't eat fast food Queen Elizabeth II does have the occasional hamburger, but she does them in a way that only a Royal would. The Queen eats her burgers bun-less and with a knife and fork, and as if that isn't fancy enough get this, she opts for a cranberry sauce instead of ketchup to flavor her meat.
7 Prince Charles Likes Eggs
Prince Charles has both low maintenance and high maintenance tastes. While he has plenty of high-priced favorites, the breakfast that he enjoys the most is a plain boiled egg. According to the kitchen staff at Buckingham Palace, Prince Charles has a single boiled egg for breakfast every day. It's a sensible breakfast, they are filling and high in protein, which the Prince definitely needs because he skips lunch every day.
6 Prince Charles Also Likes Fine Dining
While Prince Charles might enjoy a simple breakfast, he has many tastes that are far from simple, unless you are a prince. Charles has stated that his daily boiled egg is his favorite food, but that among his favorite dinners is a well done risotto. Particularly, he enjoys a wild mushroom risotto paired with slices of organic lamb.
5 Allegedly, The Queen Hasn't Had Pizza
Some say she has never eaten a slice of pizza in her entire life. Whether or not that is true is impossible to prove one way or the other, but what is a fact is that her kitchen staff admit they have never once made or served a slice of pizza to Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen does not consume many carbs, nor is she particularly big on dairy, so it is most likely she just avoids pizza now because of those reasons. Still, it is amazing to think that for an in-house chef's entire career they never once are ordered to make a pizza. It makes one think.
4 No Shellfish When Traveling Abroad
This might seem like a bizarre rule, but it is one that all the royals follow, and it makes sense when it is explained. To be clear, the royals will eat lobster and other crustaceans when at home in Buckingham Palace, but when abroad to meet dignitaries and heads of state shellfish is absolutely off-limits. But why? Safety. Shellfish can be a risky venture, and it is safer to consume it when you are close to home where you are comfortable and know what kind of medical treatment you have access to. Imagine getting food poisoning at a royal banquet, which by the way happened to another world leader once. At a banquet with the Japanese Emperor, former U.S. President George Bush Sr. vomited because he could not handle his fish. So, it really is not a far-fetched rule to follow.
3 The Royals Balance Their Food On Their Forks
Table manners are always important in the presence of the Queen, and her family follows the same rules that anyone else would have to follow. One of the biggest differences between U.S. and British table manners is the use of the fork. Instead of stabbing their food with a fork to eat, as is the American way, British royals and nobles are expected to balance their food on their forks. It makes for slower eating, but a more refined dining experience.
2 The Queen Does Not Peel Her Own Bananas
Maybe it's a power thing, maybe it's arthritis, but according to Buckingham Palace employees, Queen Elizabeth II does not peel her own bananas. Staff is always ready to do anything for the Queen, and that includes peeling her fruits and veggies. The Queen is a big fan of fresh fruit and has been spotted with a Tupperware container of fresh fruit on several occasions.
1 No Garlic Allowed
Italian food must be a rarity at Buckingham Palace because garlic is 100% banned from the premises. Perhaps the Queen does not like the smell, or perhaps she does not like the smell it puts on her breath. Either way, don't expect a side of garlic bread if you ever get the chance to dine with the royals, it just is not going to happen.
