As one of the biggest and most successful movie franchises in history, the Harry Potter franchise has been widely covered for years. Most fans know that things weren't perfect while filming, and while the franchise has endured some bad press in recent years, it still boasts a strong and loyal following.
The original films are the stuff of legend, and they helped Rupert Grint become a major name in both film and television.
After all this time, would Grint return to the role of Ron Weasley? Let's learn what he had to say about it!
The Harry Potter Film Franchise Had One Of The Most Anticipated Debuts In History
During the 2000s, the Harry Potter franchise jumped from the pages of J.K. Rowling's novels to the big screen, in what was easily one of the most-anticipated film debuts in history. The built-in audience, as well as the positive buzz surrounding The Sorcerer's Stone, propelled the film to mainstream success, starting one of the biggest film franchises in history.
While there is no such thing as a slam dunk when it comes to the world of adaptations, it's hard to believe that there were many people who saw the pending film as a potential flop. It simply had too much positive momentum to fail, and once the films were off and running, the entire world was watching.
From 2001 to 2011, the Harry Potter franchise dominated the pop culture conversation. These films were wildly successful, and the 8 films released in the main franchise generated over $7.7 billion in box office revenue.
There were many elements that went into making the franchise a success, including its perfect casting choices.
Rupert Grint Was Great As Ronald Weasley
One of the many brilliant casting decisions made was putting Rupert Grint in the role of Ron Weasley. Sure, there were lots of talented people up for the role, but Grint could not have been a better choice for the character.
Much like his fellow young co-stars, Grint was by no means a household name when he was cast as Ron Weasley. However, things changed drastically for the performer and his co-stars once that first film became a hit at the box office.
Fame initially came easy for the star, but things grew harder over time.
"For the first few Harry Potter films I was living the dream. The reason I auditioned was because I loved the books. When I got to film three or four, I started to feel an overwhelming weight of responsibility because they were so phenomenally popular. The whole press and red carpet thing was an attack on the senses. I don’t excel in that kind of environment," he said.
The temptation to quit was strong, but Grint stuck it out, and he cemented a permanent place in film history for himself.
Though it has been many years since Grint played Ron on the big screen, many fans would love nothing more than for him to return to the role that made him famous.
He Has No Conditions For A Return To The Franchise
This conversation really came to a head when the Harry Potter reunion was taking place. It was a highly-anticipated TV event that millions tuned into, and it had the fandom pounding the drum for Grint's return.
When dishing on the reunion, Grint said, "Those movies were our childhoods. We grew up on those sets so it has incredible meaning to all of us. It's been 10 years since we wrapped the last movie and we've seen each other quite a bit in-between that but not a great deal."
Now, this is where things get interesting. It was during his conversation with ET Online that the actor touched on possible returning to his iconic role.
"There's been a lot talk of [playing Ron again] with everything going on and I feel like I am that character. I think I had a very strange relationship with him at first but I feel like there's a lot of me in there so I'm quite protective of him. I don't really have a good reason to say no, I'm very proud to be a part of it," he said.
After reading this quote, we can definitely see where he's coming from. The character was a major part of his life growing up, but for some, this could send them running the other way. Grint, however, has a positive view of things.
While it will likely never happen, it's still refreshing to know that Rupert Grint would be on board with reprising his iconic role once again.
