Summary
- Gosling stepping back from acting to prioritize family and recharge before his next challenge.
- Mendes also chose family over acting, valuing privacy and spending time with their kids.
- Couple, together over a decade, prefer to keep personal life private, rarely seen in public events.
Ryan Gosling has been on a career high since the success of Barbie, which not only earned over a billion dollars at the box office, but earned the Canadian native an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor (plus an iconic performance).
While Gosling likely has his pick of projects, it appears he may be taking some time off to focus on acting, as a new report says he’s hitting pause on his career to prioritize his partner Eva Mendes and their two young daughters.
Why Ryan Gosling Is Reportedly Taking A Break From Acting After ‘Barbie’
“Spending time with Eva and the kids was obviously the top priority, but he also needed a break. Ryan tends to work in big spurts, then takes time off so he can come back to the next challenge with a full tank,” a source claimed to the National Enquirer UK.
For now, Eva and Ryan haven’t commented on the report, though the couple are notoriously private about their personal lives, so it’s not uncharacteristic of them to stay silent on rumors.
Earlier this year, some fans were concerned after Eva declined to walk the red carpet with Ryan at the Oscars. He instead took his parents and sisters for the red carpet event, while Eva later posted a message of support for her partner from backstage, showing she was on sight to watch his “I’m Just Ken” performance but not in the audience.
While Eva’s decision not to go arm-in-arm with Ryan may have surprised some fans, she’s previously explained why they don’t do red carpet events together, even if it’s the Oscars.
“We don’t do those things together,” Eva revealed in an Instagram comment last year, adding they’re “not comfortable exposing our very private life that we value.”
Eva Mendes Also Chose Her Family Over Acting
Ryan and Eva have been together for over a decade since they met on the set of The Place Beyond the Pines in 2011. In the film, they played onscreen lovers navigating a life of crime and poverty, but the critically acclaimed movie helped their off-screen relationship blossom.
They welcomed their first daughter, Esmeralda Amada, in 2014, followed by their second daughter, Amada Lee, in 2016. Only few photos exist of their kids. The couple has been vocal about the invasion of paparazzi on celebrity kids and choose to keep their daughters off socials.
For her part, Mendes has been vocal about why she’s slowed her acting down since becoming a mom, expressing gratitude for having the option to spend more time with her kids.
"It was like a no-brainer. I'm so lucky, and I was like, if I can have this time with my children... and I still worked, I just didn't act because acting takes you on locations, it takes you away,” she previously said. “It was almost just like a non-verbal agreement that it was like, 'Okay he's going to work and I'm going to work, I'm just going to work here.'"
Gosling is best known for his roles in The Notebook, La La Land, and Drive, while Mendes gained recognition for her performances in Hitch and Training Day. Despite being two of the most successful actors in the industry, it may be a while before either celebrity takes on a new project, should the recent report hold true, as it seems Gosling wants to enjoy his Barbie success by focusing on his partner and daughters.
