Fans will often speak their minds about certain casting decisions. According to inews, one person commented, "Hollywood has not invested in any young male stars in the last fifteen years and this is a perfect example. Why is Ken in his forties?" Another commented, "I was hoping for golden blonde hair but I guess this is satire."
According to Fox News, other fans commented harshly on his looks and age. One person said, "Ryan Gosling is too ugly and too old to be playing Ken, they should've casted Henry Cavill or Chris Evans bye". Evans, 41, and Cavill, 40, are both close to Gosling's age, 42.
Another critic wrote, "Ken needs some botox." And another said, "He looks like a 40yo man with a midlife crisis - too old to be Ken."
Although Gosling has some critics, he also has plenty of support. Numerous people have supported the casting decision. One person said, "Full stop calling Ryan Gosling too old to play Ken. It's [sic] perfect casting."
Another fan of the star wrote, "I just cannot believe that we live in a world where people think Ryan Gosling is either 'too ugly' or 'too old' to be playing a live action Ken doll. Y'all can't be serious. So incredibly mean & untrue & he will truly be the clear standout in that film."
Other celebrities will also be depicting different versions of Mattel's Ken doll in the film, which was co-written and directed by Greta Gerwig. Celebrities playing the other Kens include: Simu Liu, John Cena, Ncuti Gatwa, Kingsley Ben-Adir and Scott Evans. Barbie will be in theaters July 21.
Ryan Gosling Had The Best Response For His Critics
Sometimes celebrities, films, and shows are criticized for casting celebrities in certain roles. When critics said Ryan Gosling was too old to play the role of Ken in the upcoming Barbie film, the Drive actor gave his haters the best response.
According to Yahoo! He told British GQ, "If people don't want to play with my Ken, there are many other Kens to play with. It is funny. This kind of clutching-your-pearls idea of #notmyken. Like you ever thought about Ken before this?"
Gosling pointed out that no one really thought about Ken, or what he did, before his casting. "Ken, his job is beach. For sixty years, his job has been beach. What the f*** does that even mean?"
"And everyone was fine with that, for him to have a job that is nothing. But suddenly, it's like, 'No, we've cared about Ken this whole time.' No you didn't. You never did. You never cared."
"Barbie never f***** with Ken. That's the point. If you ever really cared about Ken, you would know that nobody cared about Ken. So your hypocrisy is exposed. This is why his sory must be told."
Ryan Gosling Revealed The Reason He Took The Role
Several celebrities are particular about choosing characters they will play in films or TV shows. Many stars also put a lot of work into inhabiting their roles, wanting to do as much as possible to tell their characters' stories. Some celebrities even use method acting, meaning they won't break character even when they aren't filming.
Ryan Gosling has also spoken about wanting to tell his character's story in the upcoming Barbie film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Gray Man actor discussed his reason for wanting to take the role on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Gosling praised the script, and apparently he was also inspired to take the role after seeing a Ken doll lying on the ground, seemingly unwanted. "Best script I've ever read. I walk out in the backyard and, do you know where I found (his daughters' doll) Ken, Jimmy? Face down in the mud next to a squished lemon."
After taking a picture of the plastic doll lying in the mud, he sent it to the film's director and co-writer, Greta Gerwig, along with his reply to her question about taking the role. "I shall be your Ken, for this story must be told."
During the GQ interview Gosling laughed as he continued, saying, "I care about this dude now. I'm like his representative. 'Ken couldn't show up to receive this award, so I'm here to accept it for him.'"
