Ryan Phillippe didn't let his daughter's recent openness about her mental health struggles interfere with his work — at least not on the surface.

The actor threw a sly smirk toward cameras on the red carpet of the premiere of his latest film, Miranda's Victim, on October 5. From the looks of it, you'd never assume there was any family drama occupying his mind, however, just a week or so earlier, his daughter, Ava Phillippe, who he shares with ex Reese Witherspoon, dished online about how she's really struggled with her mental health.

As many celebs do these days, Ava Phillippe took to Instagram to connect with the public and express some of the hard things she's been going through lately. On Saturday, September 30, the famous personality hosted a Q&A on her Instagram page, going into detail about her mental health struggles, sharing, "I've dealt with anxiety for as long as I can remember, and it was especially intense for me as a kid and teenager."

According to the Daily Mail report, Phillippe took on questions from viewers regarding her struggles, explaining how she deals with this kind of thing. In addition to sharing that you "shouldn't invalidate your feelings," Phillippe went on to share that her anxiety will sometimes lead her to pick at her skin, and while she has managed to get that habit under control, she still is very tempted by it.

While Ava Phillippe has made it clear online that she's close with her famous mother, Reese Witherspoon, often posting pics of her on social media, fans have often wondered if she's just as close with her father. After all, the UC Berkley graduate rarely posts pictures of Ryan Phillippe — at least not as often as she does her mother — making their relationship somewhat mysterious.

While it's easy to assume the father and daughter could have a strained relationship, that isn't necessarily the case. When Witherspoon and Phillippe split in 2006 after seven years of marriage, the Legally Blonde actress won sole custody over their two children, Ava and Deacon, which meant they naturally would spend more time with their mom over the years.

However, neither Ava Phillippe nor her father post much about each other on Instagram — there was even one instance where Phillippe failed to wish his daughter a happy birthday on the social media platform — so perhaps they don't have a very close relationship.

While Phillippe's more recent posts about her mental health seemed somewhat well received by followers, this hasn't always been the case. Phillippe, who has always been pretty open to sharing things about her personal life on Instagram, had to use the platform to ask that fans stop leaving hateful comments on her posts. This came after the aspiring artist responded to one follower asking if she liked boys or girls, saying, “I’m attracted to… people! Gender is whatever.”

In a subsequent Instagram Story, which is no longer available, the then-22-year-old Phillippe made a stern announcement. "QUICK REMINDER: I can and will block profiles commenting bigoted/ hateful messages under my posts," she shared. "My Instagram profile is not a place for cruelty/ hate speech and I intend to do what I can to keep it that way. Peace and love."
