Throughout her Hollywood career, Sandra Bullock has enjoyed major success, with more than a few of her films grossing $100 million at the box office. Not only is she a success on the big screen, but she also has fans talking after interview. That was the case after she suddenly started speaking in German on the red carpet. She's an actress with many talents.
In the following, we'll take a closer look at a different interview. At the time, Bullock was promoting her film The Proposal. The content coming out of the film was edgy with revealing scenes, and Matt Lauer made sure to notify Sandra Bullock about it repeatedly during their interview. We will take a look back at why Lauer received negative feedback for it, and how Sandra Bullock concluded the interview.
Sandra Bullock Had Some Revealing Scenes In The Film, The Proposal
Released back in 2009, The Proposal proved to be another major hit for Sandra Bullock, generating $317 million at the box office. The stacked cast also included Ryan Reynolds playing the role of Andrew Paxton, along with Betty White in the role of Grandma Annie. As Matt Lauer constantly mentioned during his Today Show interview with Sandra Bullock, the actress took on several revealing scenes with Ryan Reynolds throughout the film. Bullock revealed that certain scenes weren't exactly easy to shoot for either of them.
"Ryan and I have these flesh-colored things stuck to our privates; my hair is strategically over the nipples and Ryan‘s..."
"When they’d say cut, we couldn’t really move," she explained. "He was on his back with his knees up, and I’m on the floor just sort of resting on his knees, just waiting, and you don’t wanna look, and we couldn’t really move."
Bullock revealed that she agreed to the graphic scenes given that it was lighthearted, and to a degree, humiliating.
"I was like, ‘I will do this naked scene only if I can be humiliated and funny.’ You will not see me trying to attempt being sexy naked — in real life or onscreen," she said. "There’s just no point in it! It was for that reason, with a friend that you trusted comedically, and safety-wise I knew I was in the presence of safety.”
While promoting the film, Sandra Bullock was constantly reminded of her revealing scene. Matt Lauer had a lot to say, while Bullock made it clear she likely would not return for another interview...
Sandra Bullock Concluded Her Today Show Interview By Stating She'd Never Return After Matt Lauer Kept Bringing Up Her Revealing Scenes
“The major thing that’s changed since I’ve seen you last: I have seen you naked,” Lauer says to start off the interview. Fans assumed he'd drop it after that point, but it clearly turned into the theme of the interview. Even during the sign-off, Lauer kept at it. “Did I mention you have a nude scene in this movie?” Lauer asks.
To conclude the interview, Lauer suggests that Bullock return soon, but clearly, Sandra had other plans once the chat concluded.
“Sandra Bullock, come back more often,” Lauer says. "No, not after this interview, no,” she replies.
Sandra held true to her word as she wouldn't do another interview with Lauer, though she did return to the Today Show in 2018 and 2021. This time around, the topic of conversation was much different with Bullock discussing the difficulties in raising adopted children. "It's my kids," she said. "Everything is about them being OK, being in school, having what they need, their moments. I need to be there for every single moment that they have."
Definitely a different direction during her return interview in the years that followed the controversial chat with Lauer.
It Wasn't The First Time Matt Lauer Conducted An Awkward Interview
Imagine undergoing the scenario of suffering from a wardrobe malfunction, and if that isn't hard enough, you're asked about lessons learned from the moment... That was a reality for Anne Hathaway, who was actually there to promote Les Misérables, her film at the time and not the malfunction.
Credit to Hathaway for answering Lauer's question with class. “It kind of made me sad on two accounts. One was that I was very sad that when we live in an age where someone takes a picture of another person in a vulnerable moment, and rather than delete it and do the decent thing, sells it. And I’m sorry that we live in a culture that commodifies the sexuality of unwilling participants.”
Years later, Hathaway is still receiving praise for her response. That included praise from Mindy Kaling. "On the Today show the next morning, Matt Lauer said to her in this chastising, someone-has-been-naughty way, 'Anne Hathaway I've seen a lot of you lately, Kaling said. "First of all, gross. Are you like a lame uncle at Thanksgiving?" Kaling said. Nowadays, it seems like Lauer's interview days are behind him.
