Throughout its 12 season run, Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady, the showrunners and writers did an excellent job at maintaining the looks of the main cast. This was clearly purposely done as according to Chuck Lorre, altering their look could lead to a decrease in ratings, something the show's creator faced in the past on different shows.
In the following, we're going to take a closer look at Simon Helberg's hair and style on The Big Bang Theory. We're going to confirm if he wore a wig, and how he felt about Howard's style. In addition, we'll take a look at how different the cast looked off camera, and that includes Simon Helberg. During his interview with Stephen Colbert, fans couldn't help but notice how different the actor looked compared to his Howard character on The Big Bang Theory.
Simon Helberg Did Not Wear A Wig On The Big Bang Theory, But His Hair Took Time To Prep
Fans might be inclined to believe that Simon Helberg was wearing a wig on The Big Bang Theory, especially during the early stages given how straight his hair looked on the show. However, Helberg revealed that it wasn't a wig, and his look took time to prep before episodes of The Big Bang Theory. "I don’t wear a wig,” he said. My hair is flat-ironed, however.”
During his interview at Comic-Con, Helberg let it be known that he doesn't have the same style as Howard and in fact, he's very different to the character. "I'm not as nerdy as you think, you really put a lot of pressure on the nerdiness."
Helberg would even take a sarcastic approach with the Comic Con host, stating that he already looked the part of Howard before getting the role, which of course, is not the case. "When I auditioned for this they were like, perfect, can you bring that same hair and those pants too."
In truth, Helberg is very different off-camera, and fans especially took note of this during his interview with the rest of the cast alongside Stephen Colbert.
Fans Were Praising Simon Helberg's Look During His Interview Alongside Stephen Colbert
A YouTube short featuring Helberg and The Big Bang Theory cast went viral, however, fans in the comments section couldn't help but to talk about Helberg's different appearance. Simon was asked by Stephen Colbert when he realized the show was a big hit. The moment came during a trip to Mexico City as the cast were mobbed by fans. Even when the plane was taking off, they were still getting chased off by excited fans, Beatles style.
It was a memorable moment for the cast, however, fans were raving about Helberg's look during the interview. The actor looked very much the opposite to Howard. There was no tight clothing or belt buckle, and his hair wasn't straightened either. Instead, Helberg had his hair gelled upwards, dressed fancy, and had some scruff going on. Fans were loving it.
"How ironic after all these Seasons Howard is Suave for real?"
Another fan writes, "Watching this makes me realize that good hair style really make a difference."
"Simon is so handsome. That beard and combed back hair."
Fans were clearly impressed, but as for this type of look, that was a definite no-no for the series.
The Bang Theory Cast Had To Follow Specific Rules Regarding Their Appearance, And That Included No Beards
The main cast had a few rules they had to follow regarding their appearances. As for the men on the series, they were discouraged from growing beards. Fans have taken note that when Big Bang wasn't shooting, the main characters took advantage and decided to grow beards. This was particularly true for Kunal Nayyar, Simon Helberg and Johnny Galecki.
Chuck Lorre felt it was necessary that the main cast keep their look intact. The creator revealed that in the past, changing appearances would lead to a drop in ratings - for that reason, Lorre felt extremely nervous when Kaley Cuoco showed up to set with a completely different look without telling anyone.
As for changing the look of the main cast on-screen, it wasn't always positively received. Mayim Bialik in particular wasn't a fan of an episode that saw Amy transform her look.
“I loved that I got to wear some nicer clothes, and it was really a thrill to have my hair cut after having the same [style] for all those years… but in some ways, it did feel like a betrayal of our Amy. We didn’t go crazy and have her dressing in ways that completely didn’t look like her… but it was definitely something I had conflict about. I thought it would be, ‘Let’s dress Amy up and take her out for the night!’ I didn’t think it would be, like, here’s her new normal.”
Throughout the seasons, Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady were very consistent with the looks and wardrobes of the main cast.
