Sofia Vergara has a long history of uncomfortable interviews — from Bill Cosby making creepy comments about her on David Letterman's show to being "[dis]respected all over the place" by Howard Stern. You'd think her interviews with women would be different, but her 2009 appearance on The View was just as awkward.
When asked about being a mother at 19, Vergara seemed lost for words that she responded with a tasteless joke. Now, people can't believe she got away with it. But looking back, the Modern Family alum has been asked about being a "hot" mom so much. One time, even Lady Gaga defended her from Jay Leno's weird question about her son, Manolo Gonzales Vergara.
Sofia Vergara Awkwardly Joked About Being A Mom At 19
During Vergara's interview on The View, Sherri Shepherd said, "You are a single mom of a teenage son who's 18," to which the actress replied, "I cannot lie about my age because they count!" The host then quipped, "Well you had him when you were 12." Vergara responded with, "Yeah, 13. I was raped. [laughs]"
After a few uncomfortable laughs from other hosts like Whoopi Goldberg, Barbara Walters asked: "What's it like to have a teenage son? How does he feel when people say, 'Boy, your mom is really hot.'" The Hot Pursuit star gave a wholesome answer this time, saying, "He's fantastic. For me, I don't regret it. I would never change it. I was married when I had him. But for him, I guess it's okay. He doesn't see me like -- He doesn't think I'm that funny, that beautiful, that sexy."
Still, Joy Behar had to go back to the malicious statements like asking if Manolo is a "foot freak" or a "shoe fetishist," referring to the luxury shoe brand, Manolo Blahnik. "No, when I named him like that, I didn't even know the Manolo Blahniks existed," Vergara laughingly said. "It was worse, I was in love with Steven Bauer, the guy that played Manny in Scarface... And I thought he was so handsome so I'm like, 'I want to name my son like that.'"
Sofia Vergara married her first husband, Joe Gonzales when she was 18. They remain good friends these days.
Lady Gaga Defended Sofia Vergara From Jay Leno's Creepy "Cougar" Mom Comment
In 2011, Leno described Vergara's photo with her son as a "cougar thing," to which Lady Gaga said, "Jay! It's so sick." The actress agreed, saying, "No respect." The host argued that "it's hard to believe" Vergara is Manolo's mom. "It's not hard to believe," said the Poker Face hitmaker.
And when the America's Got Talent judge said her son "hates it" when people confuse her as his girlfriend, Gaga said, "I would imagine." Vergara played along with the gag, sharing that she explained to Manolo that people assume they have an Ashton Kutcher-Demi Moore thing going on.
The actress receives so much attention for her looks and the fact that she's a mom to a 32-year-old son. But here are some of her impressive accolades:

Sofia Vergara's Son Feels "Lucky" Growing Up With A "Hot" Mom
Manolo, who's following in Vergara's footsteps, doesn't bother about the creepy comments about his mother. "All mothers are beautiful," he cleverly told Entertainment Tonight when asked what it was like growing up with a "hot" mom. "In Miami, I went to Catholic school, and it was the priest who would come up to me and ask for autographs... My mom had calendars back then, so they were like, 'Could you bring some for the staff?' Sure, I don't know what this means, but okay."
During the ceremony for Vergara's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Manolo acknowledged the common compliments given to his mom. Although they were "correct," he said he saw a lot more in his mom's journey to fame, for which he considers himself "lucky."
He added: "Some people take their parents' success for granted, but I don't. See, I have seen how hard she has worked for her success, starting from nothing." Vergara started her career at 17 when she starred in a famous Pepsi commercial in Colombia in 1989. She went on to appear in Univision telenovelas before moving to the United States in the '90s.
She also won the Hispanic Woman of the Year Award, presented by Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchoe. In 2002, she made her film debut in Big Trouble alongside Tim Allen, followed by a Broadway debut in 2009; she played Mama Morton in Chicago.
Sofia Vergara's brother was killed in Colombia when she started appearing on TV.
