In case you've been away from social media recently, reality TV OG Spencer Pratt of The Hills is having something of a renaissance – a Spenaissance? – on TikTok and elsewhere, although the underlying circumstances are anything but funny.
On January 7, what would become a massive, uncontrollable conflagration started in Los Angeles, devolving into what is now tentatively known as the "January 2025 Southern California wildfires," with 23 separate fires burning at press time.
Spencer and wife Heidi Montag were impacted severely, and early on — Spencer shared a TikTok on the 7th, documenting a fire close to what was their home.
Less than one day later, he shared a heartbreaking followup video, simply captioned:
Nightmare came true
They lost everything, and to add insult to injury, Spencer's parents' house – his childhood home – was also lost in the ongoing disaster.
After Spencer's TikTok went viral under such horrid circumstances, fans kept tuning in, and he kept everyone updated.
Spencer also immediately shifted into gear, spearheading an effort which allowed people to passively help the family after they lost their home — against a backdrop of still images of their destroyed home, he asked for a favor:
"Please stream any of [Heidi Montag's] music on any platforms[,] it will make a huge difference! Thank you[.]"
By Sunday, January 12, Heidi's 2010 album Superficial hit the top of the iTunes charts in several countries, and celebrities joined in to encourage streaming of her album.
In addition to providing meaningful assistance to Spencer, Heidi, and their two boys, his successful campaign to boost his wife's music led to widespread admiration for him as a husband:
May we all find a partner that adores [us] like Spencer Pratt loves Heidi Montag.
It seemed several factors were in play in terms of Spencer's TikTok ascendancy after they lost their home — he was exceptionally candid about their plight to the point of being self-effacing, he asked for something that didn't cost followers anything, and most notably, per fans, he "never stops hustling for his family."
In one recent TikTok, Spencer revealed that a friend advised him to be more "humble" in his efforts to rebuild their lives, and he said:
"Dear friend, I have zero. I have no house, I have no belongings — I couldn't be more humble. But nobody's gonna gatekeep my future for my family and my success in our life.
"So if it looks like I'm not being humble, trust me, I'm humble. But I'm also not gonna stand for people blocking our future.
"So, sorry if people think I'm not being humble enough ... I'm pretty sure my existence is humble right now."
Another thing Spencer has been doing is relentlessly engaging with his followers, answering question after question with the exasperated exuberance he's shown since their house burned down.
One fan posed a question to Spencer about whether Heidi was currently pregnant, and his response was fantastic.

Spencer Pratt's raw and relatable TikTok clips led to a very interesting comment about Dancing With The Stars.
Spencer Said Heidi Will 'Never Be Pregnant Again'
On Sunday, January 12, Spencer responded to a fan's question via TikTok.
The question was visible as text at the top of the clip: "[Please] don't get mad at this question ... is Heidi pregnant?"
Spencer didn't clickbait fans either — he immediately stated that Heidi isn't pregnant, adding that she'll "never be pregnant again" as the couple is happy with their "two children."
He said maybe Heidi wasn't "super skinny" at the moment, and explained:
"But again, our house burned down with our treadmill and our VersaClimber, so maybe Heidi hasn't worked out in two weeks ..."
Later in the clip, he admitted that they hadn't had "alone time" since losing their house.
He continued:
Nobody's really in a baby-making mood over here.
Spencer said it was possible Heidi "doesn't look like a skinny runway model in your opinion," and added: "I think she looks great."
